Chris Eubank Jr is the firm favorite in betting with all major online bookies, and there’s no doubt that he deserves to be. The Englishman has performed at a higher level than his opponent and showed exactly what he is capable of when pulling off the biggest upset of his career when beating James DeGale. The public were against him that night, as they often are, but he believed in his ability and got the job done. It seems like Eubank Jr fights better under pressure and coming out of the away corner in Cardiff against a much loved Welsh fighter means he will be almost friendless in the arena on fight night.
Eubank Jr is slightly better priced than I expected him to be. That’s not because I expected him to blow Williams away with ease, quite the opposite. I predicted Junior would be tighter in the betting due to him being a bigger name, better known amongst casual followers of British boxing. It’s fair to say that only the avid supporters of the fight game will fully appreciate just how good and how dangerous Williams is. He’s no mere opponent and will come to challenge Eubank with the backing of the support.
He has lost only once inside the distance, and that was the result of a nasty double cut to his right eyelid in his first battle with Liverpool’s Liam Smith. We’re backing Eubank for victory, but he will be made to work for the win, and the value looks to be in taking the Englishman on points in the method of victory market. That’s a trickier bet to get right than the fight winner, but the odds are better.
Chris Eubank Jr enters this fight with a proud 31-2-0 record, with 23 of his wins coming by way of knockout and both defeats on the scorecards. He was beaten early in his career by long-term rival Billy Joe Saunders, going down by a narrow margin on the scorecards after 12 competitive rounds. George Groves inflicted the only other loss on his card in 2018, with Saint George winning by five rounds, four rounds and two rounds. Since then, Junior has fought five and won five.
That run includes his stunning win over DeGale, but that was fast-approaching three years ago. When getting the decision over Chunky, it was thought Chris would kick on from there, defend the IBO world title won at super middleweight and finally realise his potential. That didn’t happen. Instead, Eubank gave up the belt to move back down to middleweight in the quest for what he called bigger fights. Fights that would cement his legacy.
He has fought three and won three since, stopping two, but those bouts haven’t been anywhere near the standard required. He needs a big win and an impressive performance on Saturday to get his career back on track. Team Eubank know the style of the victory is every bit as important as the result. He must get the job done while sending out a statement of intent to the rest of the division. Junior must show he is serious about dominating at middleweight.
Liam Williams brings a 23-3-1 record, with two defeats against Liam Smith. Both were close fights, but Williams was out of his depth when losing to WBO world champion Demetrius Andrade at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Hollywood, last time out.
That points defeat was almost a year ago, and the Welshman will be desperate to get back to work. Thanks to those two postponements, he is well rested from that loss and can rely on the support of a home crowd in Wales. He’ll take all the beating and is sure to get success in the early rounds.
