After targeting the YRFI in game one between the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees, we go back to the well for game two as a pair of inconsistent pitchers are set to take the mound. Later in the night, we target the NL West divisional matchup between the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks as the Orioles Mason Black continues to struggle in his brief appearances so far this season.

With the Cleveland Guardians nipping at their heels in the overall standings, the New York Yankees are in desperate need of finishing the season out strong to help secure the first overall seed in the AL. Not only does it give the Yankees home field advantage, but they also get a bye for the first round in the playoffs. This negates the possibility of them getting upset in a best of three series in the wildcard round, strengthening their chances of making a run to the World Series.
In order for the Yankees to secure the win over Baltimore, their offense must continue to play at a high rate. Entering Wednesday’s contest against the Orioles, the Yankees are set to face off against Zach Eflin who has excelled at limiting opposing scoring opportunities. Even though his ERA of 3.53 seems daunting to fade against, Eflin has actually struggled with avoiding contact as he takes the mound averaging over one Hit Against per Inning Pitched in 27 starts this season.
His struggles with avoiding contact may come back to haunt him as he gets the unfortunate task of throwing against two of the best hitters in the league with Juan Soto and MVP front runner Aaron Judge kicking things off. Their production, along with the rest of the Yankees lineup, have contributed to high marks across the board as the Yankees rank well above league average in Team Total Hits, RBIs, Total Runs Scored, and On Base Percentage.
On the other side of the field, the Orioles offense are set to face off against the Yankees Nestor Cortes who has struggled with his command in his 2024 campaign. While he has managed to round back into form in the second half of the season, his ERA of 3.77 and FIP of 3.84 indicates he still struggles with consistently limiting opposing offensive production. Against an Orioles offense who ranks equally as well as the Yankees, expect Cortes to negatively regress on the mound.

Later in the night, we turn our attention towards the NL West divisional matchup between the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks. While the Giants are statistically eliminated from making the playoffs, the Diamondbacks are in the middle of a three way battle for a wildcard spot. Entering Wednesday’s contest, the Diamondbacks, Atlanta Braves, and New York Mets are all within two games of each other in the wildcard standings with only two of the three moving on to the playoffs.
Luckily for Arizona, their offense is in a position to open up the scoring early as they are set to face off against the Giants Mason Black. Black’s individual production on the mound has severely underwhelmed in his brief appearances so far this season, entering the contest with a WHIP of 1.515 and FIP of 5.36. To make matters worse for the Giants pitcher, his back end gives him minimal support as San Francisco’s defense ranks 25th overall in Defensive Efficiency.
As for the Giants, their regressing offense gets the opportunity to round back into form as the Diamondbacks ace pitcher Zac Gallen has quietly struggled with keeping opposing runners off the bases as his WHIP of 1.289 indicates. Better yet, Gallen is also given minimal support from his defense as Arizona enters the contest ranked 27th overall in Defensive Efficiency.
