This is a tough call. The Yankees are favored but not by much. The Yankees also have a little bit of an edge on the spread as they are favored at -1.5 on the spread.
I have to pick the Yankees on the Moneyline. They have lost their last six of their last seven games (three against the Mariners), so they are due for a victory. I realize the Mariners have been the hotter team lately, but New York will be victorious and win the rubber match in this series.
The Yankees will also bring a better lineup to this game. First Baseman Anthony Rizzo may return from injury tonight, while the Mariners will once again be without superstar rookie outfielder Julio Rodriguez, outfielder Dylan Moore, first baseman Evan White, and outfielder Taylor Trammell.
The Yankees and Mariners will both be bringing consistent pitchers to the mound in Nestor Cortes and Robbie Ray, so this game will come down to the lineups, and the Yankees have a better lineup.
The over/under for this game comes in at seven runs. That is quite low but is probably because of Seattle winning last night’s game by a whopping score of 1-0 in the 13th inning.
Vegas is not expecting this to be a high-scoring game, and I would agree with that. Both starting pitchers are very impressive and hard to hit against.
New York’s Nestor Cortes is better than Seattle’s Robbie Ray. Ray spends more time on the mounds and gets longer starts, but he has an ERA of 3.96 compared to Cortes’ shockingly low ERA of 2.57.
Overall, these are both solid pitchers that will make life hard for the hitters they face. They will have solid starts and put their bullpens in a great spot when they exit the game. I believe the Yankees will win 4-3, so I would bet on the under.

The Yankees’ and Mariners’ records may be far apart, but they are similarly good teams.
They also both beefed up their rosters with a series of Trade Deadline moves. The Yankees traded for outfielder Andrew Benintendi from the Royals, rookie pitcher Scott Effross from the Cubs, pitchers Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino from the Athletics, pitching prospect Clayton Beeter from the Dodgers, and outfielder Harrison Bader from the Cardinals.
On the other side, the Mariners also made a lot of trades at the Deadline in an effort to make the Playoffs for the first time in over 20 years.
The M’s traded for pitcher Matthew Boyd and catcher Curt Casali from the Giants, pitcher Luis Castillo from the Reds, and infielder Jake Lamb from the Dodgers.
Seattle also made the risky moves of signing infielder Jonathan Villar and claiming outfielder Travis Jankowski from the Mets. Neither of those players are having good seasons, but Seattle might be the change of scenery they so desperately need.
I am impressed by these teams’ recent acquisitions, but the real reason I would recommend watching this game is for the pitching battle.
Nestor Cortes and Robbie Ray are both solid pitchers who have proved reliable for their teams. Cortes’ dominance has been a surprise this season; He made his first All-Star team in only his first season as a full-time starter.
With that being said, Robbie Ray has also been quite solid in his first season for the Mariners. He has not received a lot of run support, but he is managing to throw almost six innings a start.
This game may come down to the bullpens. The Mariners have a top-ten bullpen with an ERA of 3.42 and WHIP of 1.09, but the Yankees have the second-best ‘pen in the league with an ERA of 2.97 and WHIP of 1.15. The Yankees’ bullpen is not significantly better than the Mariners’, but it will be the difference maker.
In addition to a superior bullpen, the Yankees have a strong lineup that has propelled them to 1st place in the AL East.
Aaron Judge may be the best hitter in the league with his .303 average, league-leading 44 home runs, and 98 RBIs, Matt Carpenter always finds a way to get on base and leads the Yankees with his .412 OBP, and Giancarlo Stanton has proven himself to be an impressive DH with his 24 home runs and 61 RBIs.
If you combine the Yankees’ superior lineup and superior bullpen, you will see that they will squeak out a win to start the series.
