After getting off to a perfect start in this year’s Leagues Cup, Inter Miami will be itching to nab back-to-back wins for the first time since May. In the competition’s opening match, Robert Taylor scored at the stroke of half-time to give the hosts a 1-0 lead at the break against Cruz Azul. Parity was restored five minutes after the hour mark via Uriel Antuna. As the game headed into stoppage time, new signing Lionel Messi announced his arrival with a stunning 94th-minute freekick that curled into the top-left corner.
Atlanta United lost the last two MLS games before the break and are looking for some respite in the Leagues Cup. Just a few weeks ago, the club had an opportunity to move into third place, but the results did not go their way, and at the midway point of the season, they are dangling in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, five points behind Philadelphia Union, who are in third. Winning the group in the Leagues Cup will be the top priority for the visitors now.
Despite struggling in the MLS, Inter Miami have already beaten Atlanta United once this season. Considering the performance of the hosts in the previous game, Inter Miami will be a tough nut to crack. Boosted by the new arrivals, the hosts are favorites to win this clash.
The two clubs have locked horns ten times in the past, and all ten games came in the MLS. This will be the first Leagues Cup encounter between the two sides. Inter Miami have a slightly better head-to-head record with four wins, while Atlanta United have been victorious in three games.
A Josef Martinez brace gave Inter Miami a comfortable 2-0 lead against Atlanta United earlier this year. The encounter was nervy in the final few minutes as Franco Negri was sent off in the 84th minute, and Andrew Gutman pulled one back for the visitors in the 92nd minute.
Whenever these two sides have clashed in Inter Miami’s backyard, both clubs have scored at least one goal in each match. Despite that, the hosts are yet to lose a game at home against their next opponents.
After struggling in the MLS this season, the Inter Miami spectators were ready to see their side finish another game without a win in the last match. However, new signing Lionel Messi came on in the second half to score the winner from a perfectly executed free kick near the box's edge.
Messi’s debut goal not only handed Inter Miami a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul but also ended a six-game winless streak for the club. The side’s last win came in another cup competition – against Birmingham Legion FC in the US Open Cup in the first half of June.
Along with Messi, Inter Miami’s midfield has also received a massive boost with the inclusion of Sergio Busquets. The Spanish midfielder is looking forward to relinking with his former Barcelona teammate on the pitch.
While Inter Miami headed into the break with a disastrous winless streak of 11 MLS games, their performance in cup competitions has been decent. During the abysmal streak in the domestic league, Inter Miami won two US Open Cup games, reaching the semi-finals of the competition.
The team looks sharp in knockout encounters and has also been boosted by the new arrivals. In the MLS, Inter Miami are rooted to the bottom of the table and have collected fewer points than any other side. However, the focus will exclusively be on the Leagues Cup now.
In the league, Inter Miami do not possess an extremely prolific record at home this season as they have only won four out of 11 matches at the DRV PNK Stadium. However, it is much better than their record away from home, as they have won just a solitary game in 11 away attempts.
Another advantageous fact for the hosts is that they have never lost a home game against Atlanta United. Inter Miami won three and drew two of the last five home encounters against Atlanta United in the MLS.
The month of July started well for Atlanta United as they blanked 2022 MLS Runners-up Philadelphia United 2-0. Then they traveled to Montreal and returned with all three points and another clean sheet.
However, before the break, they were stung in the last two games, against New England Revolution and Orlando City. The club suffered 2-1 losses in both games, with the latter coming in their own backyard.
Now, the attention turns towards the Leagues Cup, and the visitors will be looking to start with a win. If they defeat Inter Miami convincingly and beat Cruz Azul, they have a chance to win the group and advance to the next round.
In the MLS, at home, Atlanta United have lost just two out of 12 games. Despite being only their division's sixth-best home record, it has helped the club stay in the playoff spots. They could have been higher up the table if their performance on the road had been a tad better.
The club has managed to win just two out of 12 games this season in the MLS. Now, in another competition against a club that is struggling in the MLS, Atlanta United have a glorious opportunity to bring their form back on track.
Messi will not be the only Argentine to keep an eye on during this encounter. Atlanta United midfielder Thiago Almada has been in fiery form in the MLS this season, which led to his selection for the MLS All-Stars team that lost to Arsenal a few days ago.
While the 22-year-old could not make any proper contribution in that game, he has scored eight goals and assisted nine In 21 appearances this season. With a goal contribution tally of 17 in 21 starts, Almada will be eager to outshine his legendary compatriot on the pitch.
