With strong starts for both sides in the Western Conference, there should be no lack of fireworks this July 4th when the LA Galaxy host Sporting Kansas City.
The Galaxy have made significant improvements since last season, and with Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez constantly scoring, there’s reason to believe that they will be a dark horse this year.
That said, SKC should never be taken lightly.
With 22 goals scored in their first 12 games, the visitors will be charging into the holiday weekend with plenty of momentum. This is going to be close.
The Galaxy should be pushing for a win here, but the absence of a couple of important players will probably keep this level.

On Sunday, two of the top three teams in the Western Conference will get a chance to truly test themselves.
As hosts, the Galaxy will be eager to put on a show at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Regardless of their recent 2-1 loss at the venue against the Seattle Sounders, the Galaxy have been able to earn four wins from their five matches at home this season.
Most importantly, they’ve been guided by Hernandez, who has immediately racked up 10 goals in just 10 appearances.
With their striker leading the charge, the Galaxy have been impressed with their seven wins and 21 points that have pushed them to 3rd in the Western Conference.
All that said, SKC are sitting just one spot above them at 2nd with 23 points to their name.
Although they’ve had a couple more games to go through, SKC have been exciting to watch with their threatening attack that produces a league-high of 17.2 shots per game.
SKC’s away form has been fairly average, but considering that the Galaxy won’t have some key figures, they’ll have a chance of at least fighting for a draw on Sunday.
With Mexican national team call-ups set for both Jonathan dos Santos and Efrain Alvarez, the Galaxy will be missing two crucial names this weekend.
As the fulcrum of the starting XI and the conductor of the Galaxy setup, Dos Santo brings an immense amount of influence and decision-making that will suddenly be absent.
Alvarez might not be as indispensable as Dos Santos, but as seen through his game-winning goal in late June, there’s no denying that he provides occasional moments of brilliance and magic.
Will the Galaxy get the job done without them?
In SKC’s favor, they have a player who has arguably been the most outstanding name so far in the 2021 MLS season: Daniel Salloi.
After not making much of a splash in the last couple of years, the Hungarian winger has suddenly exploded with seven goals and three assists in 12 appearances.
Most notably, in his last two matches, he’s been flawless with his three goals and one assist.
Salloi is looking like one of the stories of the competition, and yet, so has a fellow attacker who will be hoping to outshoot and outscore him this weekend.
If we’re talking about a potential race for the MVP of the season, then Chicharito also needs to be in the conversation.
Even without Dos Santos or Alvarez, the difference between the Galaxy losing against a tough SKC or claiming a hard-earned point could come down to Hernandez’s efforts in the frontline.
The Mexican striker is averaging a goal every 87 minutes this season, which means that even if the Galaxy allow a goal or two, Hernandez should still keep them in the running.
