Minnesota United vs Seattle Sounders Predictions and Picks
With a 2-0 win in hand against the Houston Dynamo last week, the Seattle Sounders have now officially set a new league record for the best start to an MLS season.
After 13 games, Seattle have eight wins and five draws as the current top team in the league.
Minnesota, on the other hand, have been good, but not as great.
Although they’ve gradually made their way up the standings with an undefeated run from mid-May through June, Minnesota have now started to stumble in July.
They’re without a win in their last two games, and in their most recent result, they fell to a 2-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids.
Our Pick
Minnesota should be able to once again re-establish themselves as a playoff team, but as for this weekend, they’ll need to wait a bit longer before claiming more points..

It has been a little bit of an up and down year for Minnesota.
With four consecutive losses earned at the start of the season, there were some serious and early issues for the 2019 US Open Cup finalists.
The backline was eventually tightened up and they began to give up less chances through a more conservative approach — which led to four wins in a six-game stretch from mid-May to June.
Nonetheless, July hasn’t been nearly as forgiving.
Earlier this month, Minnesota let three points at home slip away after allowing an 82nd-minute equalizer that cemented a 2-2 draw against the San Jose Earthquakes.
In their most recent outing, they then fell to a 2-0 loss against the Colorado Rapids. To add insult to injury, Minnesota striker Ramon Abila earned a red in the defeat.
It’s a bit of a challenging time for the team, and looking ahead, they’ll now have to face a club that easily swept past them at the start of the season.
Seattle Are On An Incredible And Record-Breaking Streak
It should be repeated: With eight wins and five draws, the Sounders have set an MLS record for the best-ever start.
Seattle are absolutely incredible right now.
Forward Raul Ruidiaz has been impeccable with 10 goals in 13 games, left wing-back Brad Smith has three goals and three assists in support, and in defense, the backline has been near-perfect.
Even when needing to play without injured starters, the Sounders and manager Brian Schmetzer have always found a way to pull through.
And as for that last meeting between Seattle and Minnesota? Back in their first match of the 2021 season, the Sounders pummelled Minnesota 4-0 on April 16th.
Minnesota’s Momentum Is Quickly Slowing Down
Has much changed since that 4-0 loss for Minnesota?
In spite of their turnaround in May and June, they seem to be regressing in recent weeks.
Minnesota have gone without a win in July, and most notably against the Rapids last week, their attack was highly questionable with only two shots on target but 54% possession.
On deeper inspection of their 2021 so far, it’s also interesting to note that all of their victories have been against teams in the bottom five of the Western Conference standings (at time of writing before the weekend).
Problems tend to emerge against tougher opposition, and when facing one of the top goalscorers in the league, Minnesota’s momentum will only continue to slow.
Ruidiaz Is On A Goalscoring Blitz
After scoring in the latest 2-0 win over the Dynamo, Ruidiaz now has 10 goals for the Sounders this season.
The Peruvian has found the back of the net four times in his last five, which more than likely means he’ll be ready to hit the ground running once again this weekend.
For those keeping track, the last time Ruidiaz played against Minnesota, he scored twice in the 4-0 result back in April.
Will he find another brace this weekend?
