This is a massive game for Nashville SC and the New York Red Bulls.
For Nashville, better playoff positioning is on the line in the final weekend of MLS’ 2021 regular season.
Depending on how some other results may go, a win or potentially even a draw could have them move up to 2nd in the Eastern Conference table.
As for the Red Bulls, they’re on the very fringes of the playoff race.
That said, the seventh-placed side in the East only need a draw to guarantee themselves a place in the next round.
This match will be a tight one.
Despite the fact that three points would significantly help either club, one can’t imagine that they’ll take many risks — especially if a draw might be enough.
Pick the tie for Nashville vs New York. (+210)
It all comes down to Sunday.
By the time the weekend is over, we’ll officially know which 14 teams are going to take part in this year’s MLS playoffs.
And as for the Galaxy and Minnesota, nothing is guaranteed just yet.
While Minnesota will need to make an impression in their away trip, the Galaxy will have to hit the ground running at home.
The good news for them is that they haven’t been too bad at Dignity Health Sports Park.
Let’s dive into some of the numbers.
At home, no team in MLS has secured more draws this season than the eight that Nashville have accumulated.
The story remains the same for total draws as well.
With 17 ties total — which is over 50% of their results — Nashville currently lead the league in draws in 2021.
It seems like a risky approach, but with only four losses so far, they’ve become one of the more difficult and impressive sides in MLS.
And up against the Red Bulls, they’ll likely face a team that will be more than happy to keep things pragmatic and cautious.
It doesn’t matter how they get there, all that matters for the Red Bulls this weekend is that they qualify for the playoffs.
With the knowledge that one point will be enough to secure that postseason invitation, there’s no reason for them to take their chances and push forward for a win.
Caution should be the aim from the get-go, and fortunately for the Red Bulls (and also for Nashville), their backlines have been near-perfect this season.
One thing that Nashville and the Red Bulls have in common: The same amount of goals allowed.
With 32 goals let in during 33 games, both teams not only share that equal number, but also currently lead the league with the Seattle Sounders as the clubs with the fewest goals allowed.
Detailed statistics back up these efforts too.
Keeping in mind that the league xGA (expected goals against) average is currently at 47, Nashville’s total of 36.3 and New York’s total of 37.1 are commendable.
And more than likely, these numbers also highlight the fact that both could keep each other quiet in a tense draw.
