After an inconsistent spell a while back, New England Revolution recovered well over the past few weeks. A five-game winless run ended with an eagerly anticipated 3-1 win against Inter Miami a month ago. The win was followed by two more positive results against Orlando City and Toronto FC. Then came the mammoth encounter against FC Cincinnati, and New England Revolution could only take a point from it after a hard-fought 2-2 draw. However, this past weekend, a major blow was dealt when the club lost 2-1 against New York Red Bulls.
Unlike their opponents, Atlanta United are coming into this game on the back of two consecutive victories. The side caused a major upset last week when they beat Philadelphia Union 2-0. This past weekend, they visited Montreal and returned with all available points and a second successive shutout after a narrow 1-0 win. It is safe to say that Atlanta United have recovered well from the 4-0 thumping they received at the hands of the New York Red Bulls a little over two weeks ago.
The New England Revolution are backed by their resilience at home this season, while the recent form of Atlanta United is better. This will be a tightly contested encounter, and in the end, the hosts will be too hot to handle for the Atlanta United defense.
In total, there have only been 12 MLS encounters between these two clubs. Atlanta United have the better head-to-head record with five wins, while New England Revolution have only won three games, with the remaining four ending in draws.
The fourth draw came earlier this season at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in an enthralling fashion. Carles Gil opened the scoring in the first minute before Bobby Wood doubled the visitors’ advantage.
Goals from Georgios Giakoumakis, Thiago Almada, and Miguel Berry turned the game on its head. Moments away from the final whistle, Gil struck in the third minute of stoppage time to restore parity, and both sides settled for a point.
The upcoming match is at New England Revolution’s fortress, where Atlanta United have only won once in five attempts. Their only win as an away team against New England Revolution came in the 2019 MLS season.
Ezequiel Barco’s brace was enough to give Atlanta United a crucial win in a season where they faced New England Revolution thrice and beat them in all three games, including a playoff clash. The visitors will be hoping for a similar occurrence this season.
The New England Revolution suffered a setback this past weekend as they went down against the New York Red Bulls and lost their seven-game unbeaten streak in the MLS. The loss demoted them from second to third in the Eastern Conference league table.
However, as things stand, they are only one point off Nashville SC and also have a game in hand. A win against Atlanta United will see New England Revolution leapfrog Nashville SC and reclaim second place.
If everything goes their way, the gap to division leaders FC Cincinnati will be five points. New England Revolution will have to build on the momentum and try their best to keep up with FC Cincinnati, who are in fiery form this year.
The New England Revolution have played ten games at home so far. They have won seven, drawn the other three, and are yet to lose a home game this season. They are the only team apart from FC Cincinnati, who still have an unbeaten record at home.
The New England Revolution’s last home loss came in September last season against CF Montreal. This season, only Chicago Fire FC, FC Cincinnati, and New York City FC have taken a point away from the Gillette Stadium.
The New England Revolution have scored 36 goals in 21 games so far. Bobby Wood and Carles Gil have chipped in with seven goals each. Additionally, the total goal contribution count of the duo is 21 since Wood has four assists and Gil has three.
The duo has consistently played a crucial role in New England Revolution's success this season and could add to their collective tally against Atlanta United on Wednesday. The two have already scored against this opposition in the reverse fixture.
The 2023 MLS season got off to a great start for Atlanta United, starting with just two defeats in ten games. They won on the opening day but drew the second match against Toronto FC. After that, they won back-to-back games against Charlotte FC and Portland Timbers.
Despite getting such a good start, Atlanta United have failed to secure three successive wins in the MLS this season. Every time the club has won back-to-back games, it has faltered in the third game, and the match has either ended in a draw or a loss.
If Atlanta United want to pull off an upset, they will need to break this unwanted pattern and nab three successive wins for the first time this season. However, with the challenges that are in their way, it seems to be a difficult task, and the side might just play for a draw.
Atlanta United secured a stunning win over last season's runners-up, Philadelphia Union, last week. However, just half an hour into the game, they were dealt a huge blow as their top scorer, Georgios Giakoumakis, limped off the pitch while clutching his hamstring.
The Greek international missed the game against CF Montreal this past weekend and will also miss the next one against New England Revolution. The visitors could solely rely on Thiago Almada for goals and creativity in the next match.
The win in Montreal this past weekend was only Atlanta United's second away win of the campaign. The club has drawn five and lost four of 11 away games. Despite having the third-best goals-per-match average in the MLS, Atlanta United have struggled to score in away games.
They have scored just 14 and conceded 22 in 11 away games. This is a major concern for the side, especially considering the fact that they are up against a top side in the next game and will be heading into that game without their leading scorer.
