New England Revolution vs Sporting Kansas City

New England Revolution vs Sporting Kansas City Predictions

After losing against defending champions Los Angeles FC, New England Revolution have won three and drawn two of their last five games. The wins came against Nashville FC, DC United, and CF Montreal. They were held to draws by New York City FC and Columbus Crew.

Sporting Kansas City are rooted to the bottom of the table, and the outcome of the last five games truly reflects their form this season. They have lost four and drawn one. Interestingly, that solitary draw came against 2022 MLS runners-up Philadelphia Union three weeks ago.

When table-toppers meet bottom-dwellers, the encounters are often mercurial. However, the fate of this one seems to be written in stone as the New England Revolution are an unstoppable force this season. Despite a few concerns, the hosts should sail to victory.

Previous Meetings

This will be the 21st MLS encounter between the two sides. The New England Revolution have a slightly better head-to-head record with nine wins. Sporting Kansas City have won this fixture on seven occasions, and only four out of 20 clashes have ended in draws.

The most recent encounter between the two clubs came last season at Children’s Mercy Park. The game was tied 1-1 before Emmanuel Boateng scored an 87th-minute winner to give New England Revolution a win.

In the last five meetings, Sporting Kansas City have nabbed just one win, and that came in 2017 when they won 3-1 at home. However, beating the New England Revolution in their backyard has been tedious. In nine games at the Gillette Stadium, Sporting Kansas City have only won once.

That solitary victory came in the 2012 MLS season when Teal Bunbury scored the only goal of the match. Sporting Kansas City held the hosts to a goalless draw in the next season. After that, the visitors have not taken a single point from the Gillette Stadium.

New England Revolution Favorites To Extend Unbeaten Streak

Despite being at the top of the table, the New England Revolution will be frustrated due to the result last week. The club had a slender one-goal lead as the game headed into second-half stoppage time before Sean Zawadzki struck in the 98th minute to give Columbus Crew a crucial point.

New England Revolution looked dull offensively and will be looking to restore their form in the next game and clinch another win to consolidate their position at the top of the Eastern Conference.

As things stand, FC Cincinnati are level on points with New England Revolution, so a win against Sporting Kansas City is a must. That probable win could see the hosts extend their unbeaten streak to six games in the MLS this season.

Unbeaten At Home This Season

Another advantageous factor for the New England Revolution in this fixture is their form at home. In four games played at the Gillette Stadium so far, the hosts have won three and drawn just one. Their only draw so far has come against New York City FC.

Last season, the New England Revolution lost only four out of 17 home games. This season, they will want to match or even better that record. Another positive result will help them nab another victory at home and match their season’s best unbeaten run of 2022 between May and July.

Key Winger Suspended For New England Revolution

In eight games so far, the New England Revolution have scored 13 goals. They have not relied on a single source for their goals, as Bobby Wood, Gustavo Bou, Carles Gil, and Dyland Borrero have all scored two goals each this season.

While the first three names on that list will be ready and gunning to go against Sporting Kansas City, Borrero will serve his suspension after receiving his marching orders against Columbus Crew last week.

Sporting Kansas City Desperate For First Win

LA Galaxy and Sporting Kansas City are the only two teams in the MLS this season that are yet to win a game. In the 2021 MLS, they finished third in the Western Division but failed to clinch their third MLS title and a first since 2013 that season.

Their form has declined since then and it is falling consistently, causing major concern throughout the club. Last season was also disappointing for them, but they still managed to win 11 games and finished with a better record than six other MLS teams.

Eight games into the new campaign, Sporting Kansas City have only mustered three points from three draws and have lost the other five games. Four of those five losses have come in the club’s last five MLS encounters, adding to their concerns.

Club Has Fired Blanks In The Last Three Games

Last month, Sporting Kansas City scored in the 2-1 loss against FC Dallas to end their three-game barren spell in front of goal. They scored again in the next match but ended up losing 4-1 against Seattle Sounders. That was the last goal scored by Sporting Kansas City.

Since then, the club has played three games in the MLS, and they have not scored in any of those three games. Sporting Kansas City have scored the fewest goals in the league this season. Their per-match goal-scoring average is down to 0.3 goals, while their next opponents are scoring 1.6 goals per match.

New Center Back Will Serve His Suspension

In the pre-season transfer window, Sporting Kansas City roped in defender Robert Castellanos to reinforce the defense. It took time for the 24-year-old to break into the starting lineup, but eventually, he made his mark with a solid performance against Philadelphia Union.

Castellanos helped his side keep their third cleansheet of the season before performing well against Colorado Rapids. He made his third successive start for the club last week after joining in February. Unfortunately, Castellanos lasted only 38 minutes before he was shown a straight red.

Midfielder Nemanja Radoja will also be on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury. That will make Sporting Kansas City vulnerable through the middle.
