How can the Heat beat the Raptors?

Undermanned and outgunned, the Miami Heat are coming off of a blowout loss to the Boston Celtics. If they hope to beat the Toronto Raptors, Miami must find the ball movement they need to overcome a vicious Toronto defense.

In their blowout loss to the Boston Celtics, the Heat found themselves converting on 38.6% of their threes, but just 39.1% from the field overall. While they assisted on 25 of their 34 field goals, too often were they forced into difficult shots.

Against a more talented defensive team in the Raptors, the Heat must recognize where they have the advantage to win. The frontcourt is where they can succeed, as the Raptors play quite small. However, they won’t find a win if they settle for low-percentage looks.

Heat Key Player: (C) Bam Adebayo

Things only seem to be getting tougher for the Miami Heat, as Bam Adebayo is the last of their regular stars left in the lineup. Despite not being an offensive focal point, he must be aggressive against the Raptors.

In the Miami Heat’s 30-point loss to the Boston Celtics, Adebayo posted a modest 12 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in 32 minutes of play.

It isn’t that Adebayo isn’t capable offensively, but he’s never been asked to be such an option when the Heat are healthy. Against a diminutive Raptors frontcourt, Adebayo must be dominant.

How can the Raptors beat the Heat?

The Toronto Raptors have now won two straight games, but surely don’t want to drag themselves through another triple-overtime affair against the Miami Heat.

For the Raptors to take down the Miami Heat, they need to find some production out of the bench. In their last meeting against the Heat, Raptors coach Nick Nurse played an 8-man lineup that found just 9 points off the bench.

A top-heavy team, the Raptors will always play their starting five the most. However when staggered with the bench, that starting five must create opportunities for their reserves in order to find enough production for a victory in 48 minutes.

Raptors Key Player: (G) Gary Trent Jr.

One of the most in-form players in the NBA, Gary Trent Jr. has been leading the Raptors through their recent successful streak. When Toronto face the Heat again, all eyes will be on the scoring prowess of Trent Jr.

In his last game, a win over the Atlanta Hawks, Trent Jr. posted 31 points and 6 rebounds on 10 of 22 shooting from the field. He was excellent from three-point range as well, converting on 9 of 15 attempts from deep.

Having score 30-plus points in his last 4 games, Trent Jr. will once again need to be an offensive threat for the Raptors. Considering the inconsistency of their depth, Trent Jr. will be looked at to make up for their lack of production.
