How Can the Suns Beat the Grizzlies?

The Phoenix Suns are far and away the best team in the league through the NBA’s regular season campaign. When they take on the Memphis Grizzlies, who are second in the Western Conference, Phoenix will be looking to establish their dominance of the conference.

The Memphis Grizzlies love playing at a high pace, but they struggle when you can limit their ability to get out and run. In wins, the Grizzlies win the rebounding battle by 10.2, allowing them to push the break quickly off of their defence.

Phoenix needs to be efficient with their offence, in order to limit Memphis’ ability to counter them on the break. They’re one of the league’s best at taking care of the ball, 7th overall in turnovers per game, so Phoenix have the structure to slow down the Grizzlies.

Suns Key Player: (C) DeAndre Ayton

The Phoenix Suns are excellent in all areas of the court, but it is DeAndre Ayton who can change the game for the Suns. Against the Grizzlies, Ayton’s ability on the inside will determine Phoenix’s success.

In his last game, a win over the Golden State Warriors, Ayton posted 16 points and 16 rebounds on 7 of 17 shooting from the field. He could’ve been more efficient, and he also committed 5 turnovers.

Ayton can’t create offence on his own, but his athleticism and awareness make him an incredibly efficient player on both ends of the court. He’ll be tasked with fighting off the Grizzlies on the boards.

How Can the Grizzlies Beat the Suns?

The Memphis Grizzlies want to show the league that they can compete with the best in the NBA. Phoenix are a difficult team to manage, especially without Ja Morant in the lineup. If they hope to win, they must disrupt the Suns’ offence.

With Chris Paul at the helm and a group of very willing passers, the Phoenix Suns are ranked 4th in the league with 27.3 assists per game. Ball movement is integral to their success, producing 24.6 assists per game in losses to 27.9 in wins.

Phoenix’s turnover rate doesn’t fluctuate much, regardless of result. If the Grizzlies want to find victory, they’ll need to control the pace and try to limit Phoenix’s offence to more one-on-one play.

Grizzlies Key Player: (G) Tyus Jones

The Memphis Grizzlies haven’t missed a step with Ja Morant out due to injury. With Tyus Jones’ recent play, there is optimism despite their All-Star being unavailable.

In his last game, Jones posted an impressive line of 25 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals in 35 minutes of play. He shot 10 of 21 from the field while also converting on 5 of 10 three-pointers.

Jones’ ability to run the Grizzlies’ offence in Morant’s stead has been encouraging. If he can maintain Memphis’ pace, the Grizzlies have a great chance at winning.
