Every year the most spectacular bench player in the NBA is awarded the Sixth Man of the Year award. This NBA award is one of the league’s youngest, with its first winner being named in just 1983.
The Sixth Man of the Year award heavily takes into account a player’s individual success. While team success is considered, stellar production by a bench player tends to overcome their team’s record.
Let’s answer some of the most important questions about the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award!
Season | Team | Age | Games | MPG | PPG | RPG | APG | SPG | BPG | FG% | 3P% |
2021-22 | GSW | 22 | 76 | 30.0 | 18.5 | 3.4 | 4.0 | 0.8 | 0.3 | .448 | .364 |
The Golden State Warriors have the privilege of being a championship roster while also sporting one of the league’s rising talents in Jordan Poole. A true scorer on a team whose offence is liberal to say the least, Poole has a great chance at the Sixth Man of the Year award.
In his championship winning season, Poole averaged career highs across the board. He averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.4 rebounds on 44.8% shooting from the field and 36.4% shooting from three-point range.
Poole is expected to get his numbers, but the biggest effect on his Sixth Man of the Year campaign will be his status as a starter or bench player. Due to injuries, Poole actually started 56 of his 71 appearances. If he can’t limit his starts to less than half than his total games played, he can’t even be considered.

The Miami Heat didn’t reach their desired destination last season, but they were able to find an excellent season from third-year guard Tyler Herro. Looking to make another jump next season, Herro is sure to make another run for the award.
Last year, Herro put up career numbers across the board. He posted 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists on 44.7% shooting from the field and 39.9% shooting from three. His versatility at either guard position was crucial to their success.
The question for Herro entering this season is whether or not he’ll be able to cope with his increased role. With the veteran stars of the Heat a year older, Herro is expected to take on an even greater role with Miami.

The Boston Celtics made a big move when they acquired Malcolm Brogdon. The former rookie of the year will join the NBA Champion runner-up and is expected to become their lead playmaker.
Brogdon is expected to backup Marcus Smart, which should take some strain off of his body. The veteran point guard only played 36 games last season, and he’s played less than 56 games in 4 of his 6 seasons. Health will determine his chances at the award.

Anfernee Simons enjoyed the best season of his career in 2021-22. With the departure of CJ McCollum and Norman Powell, Simons thrived in a larger role. Simons found himself starting in 30 of his 57 games last year, so whether or not he’ll be eligible this year is a question.
The winner of the 2022 NBA Sixth Man of the Year award was Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat. Herro is the first Miami Heat player to win the award in its near-40 year history.
In Herro’s Sixth Man of the Year winning season, he averaged 20.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists on 44.7% shooting from the field and 39.9% from three. He started just 10 of the 66 games that he played.
Herro was the landslide winner of the award, garnering 96 of 100 first place votes. His runner-up was veteran big man Kevin Love of the Cleveland Cavaliers, then Cameron Johnson of the Phoenix Suns.
The winner of the Sixth Man of the Year award is expected to be announced following the conclusion of the NBA regular season and Play-In Tournament. While it was previously announced at the NBA Awards, the event was cancelled after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year, the NBA Sixth Man of the Year was announced separately by the winner’s team. It was also publicly broadcast on an episode of Inside the NBA, during the NBA Playoffs.

The Sixth Man of the Year award is determined by a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters from across the United States and Canada. Each member of the panel casts a first, second, and third place vote for whom they believe will be Sixth Man of the Year.
To be eligible for the award, a player must make more appearances as a member of the bench unit than as a member of the starting five.
There has never been a unanimous winner of the Sixth Man of the Year award.
The closest a player has been to a unanimous Sixth Man of the Year award was Manu Ginobili in 2008. He garnered 123 out of a possible 124 first place votes.
The only rookie to ever win the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award was Ben Gordon of the Chicago Bulls.
In his debut campaign and Sixth Man of the Year award winning season, Gordon averaged 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists on 41.1% shooting from the field and 40.5% shooting from three.
Americans have dominated the Sixth Man of the Year award. However in the history of the prize there have been six international players who have won the award. Those players are the following:

The Boston Celtics made a big move when they acquired Malcolm Brogdon. The former rookie of the year will join the NBA Champion runner-up and is expected to become their lead playmaker.
Brogdon is expected to backup Marcus Smart, which should take some strain off of his body. The veteran point guard only played 36 games last season, and he’s played less than 56 games in 4 of his 6 seasons. Health will determine his chances at the award.

To open the 2022-23 NBA season, Jordan Poole leads the race for the Sixth Man of the Year award. Should he win the prize for the Golden State Warriors, it’d be the first for his team.

In the history of the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award, there have been just seven teams to not produce a winner. Those teams are:
To open the 2022-23 NBA season, Jordan Poole leads the race for the Sixth Man of the Year award. Should he win the prize for the Golden State Warriors, it’d be the first for his team.

— Hoop Central (@TheHoopCentral) January 11, 2022
Anfernee Simons enjoyed the best season of his career in 2021-22. With the departure of CJ McCollum and Norman Powell, Simons thrived in a larger role. Simons found himself starting in 30 of his 57 games last year, so whether or not he’ll be eligible this year is a question.
