How Can the Warriors Beat the Celtics?

The Golden State Warriors were great against the Celtics in Game 2. While their role players could still produce more on the offensive side of the ball, their defensive pressure on the ball made the difference.

In their Game 2 victory over the Boston Celtics, the Golden State Warriors were able to force 18 turnovers. Most notably, Smart, Tatum, and Brown, three of their higher-usage players, committed 11 of their 18 turnovers on the night.

The Celtics don’t have a true point guard to initiate the offence, so it becomes playmaking by committee. The Warriors are uniquely equipped to switch at every position, so Boston must overcome the intense ball pressure to retake the lead in the series.

Warriors Key Player: (F) Draymond Green

When the Warriors lost Game 1, all eyes were on Golden State’s supporting cast and their inability to score. Instead of falling into a shooting battle, it was Draymond Green who stepped up to lead the defence to victory.

Draymond’s stat-line was modest to the average viewer, posting 9 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, a steal, and a block in 34 minutes of play. However, Green has been forcing players to shoot 10.3% worse than their average field goal percentage when he’s guarding them.

After just two games, it looks like the Warriors are outgunned in the scoring department. But if Green maintains his defensive standards, Golden State can overcome any deficit.

How Can the Celtics Beat the Warriors?

The Boston Celtics lost Game 2, but will have some comfort in returning to Boston for their next two games. Despite assisting on 24 of their 30 field goals, Boston shot just 37.5% from the field and struggled to keep pace with the Warriors.

The biggest issue for the Celtics in Game 2 against Golden State was their willingness to fall into the Warriors’ defensive game plan. Boston’s finishing in the paint was stifled as they allowed Golden State to control the game.

Boston finished Game 2 shooting just 15 of 43 from inside the arc, something they can’t afford against the relatively small Warriors. They need to bring back their ball movement and pace, in order to beat the organization of Golden State’s defence.

Celtics Key Player: (F) Jayson Tatum

Once again, Jayson Tatum has flip-flopped on his performances. Despite the Celtics’ loss, Tatum was back to his high-scoring ways in Game 2. He was a team-low minus-36 in Game 2, mostly due to his shift from playmaker to high-volume scorer.

Tatum posted 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists on 8 of 19 shooting from the field and 6 of 9 three-point field goals. Due to his willingness to play one-on-one rather than look for teammates, he was just 2 of 10 from inside the arc and committed 4 turnovers.

The Celtics need Tatum to play an all-around offensive game to beat the Warriors. They’ll be thankful that he found his shooting from range, but his ability to create opportunities for others is what makes the Celtics so threatening.
