Best NCAAF Week 5 Parlay Picks: It’s Time for Georgia and Alabama

  • The Virginia Tech Hokies are allowing just 160 passing yards per game.

  • Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe has scored two rushing touchdowns each game this season.

  • The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers are allowing nearly 177 rushing and 250 passing yards per game and take on a dual-threat Boston College Eagles quarterback, Thomas Castellanos.

Week 5 of the college football season is here, and the biggest game to date will also be played. The Georgia Bulldogs travel to Alabama to take on the Crimson Tide.

Below, I have a three-leg parlay for this week’s slate. The odds are +590, courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook.

Let’s check out these games, which include the Crimson Tide, Miami Hurricanes, and Boston College Eagles.

Miami vs. Virginia Tech: Over 55.5 (-105) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Miami and quarterback Cam Ward have been lighting up scoreboards everywhere across college football, and this week, they have the Virginia Tech Hokies at home. To this point, Miami has played Florida, Florida A&M, Ball State, and South Florida in that order. The game against Florida was a notable task against an SEC in-state rival, but it’s been pretty simple so far.

Ward is the Heisman favorite at the moment, completing 72.4% of his passes for over 1,400 yards, 14 touchdowns, and just two interceptions. He also has 100 rushing yards.

However, against Virginia Tech, I’m a bit hesitant to take them as 18.5-point favorites, so I decided to stick with the over.

Virginia Tech has held up against the pass this season, allowing just 160 passing yards per game (28th). They do allow 181 rushing yards (103rd) so that should still bode well for the Hurricanes, especially running back Damien Martinez.

Virginia Tech has a dual-threat quarterback of their own in Kyron Drones. Drones has 258 rushing yards and two rushing scores. As a passer, he has 765 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Miami’s defense has looked stout, but again, the competition hasn’t exactly been there.

I think the Hokies can put up some points here, so I’ll lean with the over at 55.5.

Alabama +2.5 (-115) at FanDuel Sportsbook

Alabama is a home underdog, and that hasn’t happened since 2007. Yes, it’s been about 17 years.

Both Alabama and Georgia are undefeated heading into this game and inside the top four teams in the AP Top 25.

They’re both rested, heading into this one, coming off of Week 4 bye weeks.

Before the bye, Alabama played Wisconsin on the road and demolished them 42-10. Wisconsin starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke got hurt early in the game, but Alabama's dominance was still on display.

As for Georgia, they gutted out a 13-12 win over Kentucky on the road. I think we’ll see a much different Georgia team in Week 5, though. It’s as if they were waiting to unleash some big-time plays for this matchup and not put too much on film.

However, Georgia’s defense will need to wrangle Crimson tide quarterback Jalen Milroe who’s looked outstanding this season. He’s completing 66% of his throws for 590 yards, eight touchdowns, no interceptions, and is averaging 11.1 yards per attempt. As a runner, he has 183 rushing yards and six touchdowns, scoring two in each game.

Georgia’s defense allows 110.7 rushing yards per game (42nd) and just 91.3 passing yards (first). However, Georgia has played Clemson, Tennessee Tech, and Kentucky to start the season. Clemson was the most notable competition, and they shut down their quarterback, Cade Klubnik, but Kentucky quarterback (and former Georgia Bulldog) Brock Vandagriff isn’t exactly known for slinging it around the field.

The 91 or so passing yards per game is also a bit propped up by Tennessee Tech throwing for just 18 yards in Week 2.

Yes, you read that right—18.

Alabama’s defense is the “weaker” of the two on paper, but they also had a quality win on the road against Wisconsin.

I think the home team manages to keep it close enough to cover or win outright. This is a massive step up in competition for both teams compared to what they’ve played so far this season. If Milroe can continue to keep the ball out of harm’s way and run effectively, they should come away with the win.

Boston College -12.5 (-110) at FanDuel Sportsbook

In Week 4 of the college football season, Boston College hosted Michigan State and pulled off a late victory on a Lewis Bond touchdown with less than two minutes to go. In Week 3, they lost at Missouri, an SEC opponent, but by just six points.

Now, in Week 5, they’re less than two touchdown favorites against a Western Kentucky squad that’s allowing a plethora of yards to opposing offenses, including 176.8 rushing yards (tied for 99th) and 249.5 passing yards (107th). So far this season, Western Kentucky has played Alabama, which skews things a bit, but after them, it was Eastern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, and Toledo.

Against Toledo, Western Kentucky allowed quarterback Tucker Gleason to complete 19 of 33 passes for 200 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also had 12 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Here, Western Kentucky will try to slow down another dual-threat quarterback in Thomas Castellanos. This season, Castellanos is completing 64.3% of his passes for 729 yards, 10 touchdowns, and two interceptions. As a runner, he has 136 rushing yards and a touchdown. On passes, he’s pushing the ball downfield, averaging 10.4 yards per attempt.

The Hilltoppers are also starting backup quarterback Caden Veltkamp for the injured T.J. Finley. Veltkamp has looked OK this season, but their competition hasn’t been the greatest after Alabama.

The Eagles defense has six interceptions and 10 pass breakups.

I think Western Kentucky gets overwhelmed here on the road at Chestnut Hill.
