According to the betting odds, Villanova is the most likely bubble team to qualify for March Madness. They won five of their last six games but face a tough Big East schedule to close out the regular season with matchups at Seton Hall and against No. 10 Creighton still to come before the conference tournament.
Utah has a solid chance of overcoming its +150 odds to make the tournament. At 18-11, they are tied for 28th with four Quad 1 wins, are 46th in the NET, and are 48th in KenPom’s rankings. They went through a tough stretch in the middle of the season but won back-to-back games (decisively) and had an easier matchup with Oregon State before facing 19-10 Oregon in the regular-season finale.
Virginia (+115 to make the tournament) is limping to the finish line with four losses in its last six games, but it only has one matchup against 13-16 Georgia Tech remaining before the ACC Tournament begins. Coach Tony Bennett is one of the most experienced coaches in college basketball and should be able to guide his team to a run and a potential berth in the bracket.
The first Division I men’s basketball tournament was held in 1939. This was also the first time the term “March Madness” was used, though it wasn’t directed toward the college tournament. Only eight teams competed, and Oregon beat Ohio State for the first-ever title.
UCLA leads all programs with 11 national championships, though they have not won the final game since 1995. Kentucky is next in line with eight, followed by North Carolina (six), and Connecticut, Duke, and Indiana, all with five.
The Connecticut Huskies won the most recent NCAA Tournament. They capped off a stellar tournament with a 76-59 win against San Diego State in the championship game.
UCLA has won more national championships (11) than any other program.
15 schools won multiple March Madness titles, including all of the following:
UCLA - 11
Kentucky - 8
North Carolina - 6
Connecticut - 5
Duke - 5
Indiana - 5
Kansas - 4
Villanova - 3
Cincinnati - 2
Florida - 2
Louisville - 2 (one vacated)
Michigan State - 2
North Carolina State - 2
Oklahoma State - 2
San Francisco - 2
Seven teams won consecutive March Madness titles, and UCLA is the only team to do it multiple times.
The teams with consecutive national titles include:
Oklahoma State: 1945-46
Kentucky: 1948-49
San Francisco: 1955-56
Cincinnati: 1961-62
UCLA: 1964-65, 1967-73
Duke: 1991-92
Florida: 2006-07
