Paige Beckers is not going to win the Women’s Wooden Award because she put up 16 points and nine rebounds against Farleigh-Dickinson. Nor will JuJu Watkins for putting up 22 points against Santa Clara or Hannah Hidalgo for leading Notre Dame to a win over USC.
However, these early games can lead to bettors putting money down on certain players, leading to a shift in their Women’s Wooden Award odds, not so much among the leaders. But the odds have moved quite a bit for several players.
Let’s take a look at the women’s Wooden Award odds and a closer look at several of the top candidates.

In its 21-year history, the award has gone to 12 seniors, 7 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 1 freshman.
The position breakdown is as follows: 9 guards, 5 centers, and 7 forwards.
Five of the last six winners were guards.
Eight winners were from the national championship winner; four of those winners were from UConn.
Six winners have come from UConn; two from LSU, Tennessee, Baylor, Oregon, South Carolina, and Iowa; Stanford, Washington, and Duke have each had one.
There have been seven 2X-winners; six were back-to-back winners.
One winner’s team lost in the national title game, eight lost in the Final Four, one lost in the Elite Eight, and two lost in the Sweet 16
It would not be fair to judge star players harshly for not producing monster stat lines against the soft opponents they face in the early weeks of the season. They may not log too many minutes, and even if they do, teams may not necessarily have the game flow through their stars against soft opponents.
Why not? Because they don’t need it to.
However, that does not mean players who blow up in these early games should be overlooked. What if Hannah Hidalgo can hang 20+ points on a quality opponent like USC, just like she did against Purdue, James Madison, or Lafayette?
Oh…wait a minute…she did.
So Paige Bueckers and JuJu Watkins have been playing fine so far; the odds have only changed slightly for them. But the odds have moved significantly for other players near the top of betting boards. Let’s take a closer look at them:
Hannah Hidalogo’s odds have seen one of the more significant shifts, moving from +1500 when the season got underway to +550 in just a few weeks. It is not hard to understand why she’s got bettors excited. Notre Dame is among the top ten in the country in scoring, and she leads the Fighting Irish in scoring.
After putting up this stat line (24 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 steals) against No. 3 USC, she is not just beating up on lesser teams for her stat lines.

As long as she is coming off the bench, it just isn’t going to happen to her. In Sunday’s loss to UCLA, she logged only three minutes. Her odds have moved from +1500 in the preseason to +2600 at FanDuel.

Johnson is leading the No. 7 LSU Tigers in scoring with 24 points per game and is a big reason why the Tigers are off to an undefeated 6-0 start. She has scored under 24 points just once (18) and has two double-doubles to her name already.
Her odds give her just a 3.23% chance of winning, but that number is an improvement over preseason chance of 2.17% (+4500 odds). But if she continues scoring like she has been, her odds we’ll continue to get shorter.

If all things stay the same, Miles will not overtake Hidalgo and win the award. However, if Hidalgo were to slip or miss time and she steps up, she could potentially move up betting boards and into the conversation (current stat line—18.6 points, 8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game.

Bueckers has not given me a reason to go with her over Watkins. At the same time, Watkins has not given me a reason to doubt her (yet). Until she does or someone else emerges, I’ve got to stick with JuJu.
I look at her play up to now as a ‘proof of concept.’ Was her big season last year because Olivia Miles was out? So far, it looks like the answer to that question is no. But she will need to keep it up throughout the season, especially when the schedule gets tough.
Olsen is playing well, but she’ll need to step up her game sometime soon if she’s going to have a shot. Haily Van Lith, on the other hand, is having a solid season for the undefeated Horned Frogs, and she does more than just score points (17.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game).
Both are worth keeping an eye on for now.

Futures odds, like for the Women’s Wooden Award, consist of at least three numbers preceded by a plus (+) or minus (-).
The odds for most players (if not all) will be listed with a plus sign. No player listed with a plus sign has a better than 50% chance of winning. But at any given point during the season, there could be a player who has outperformed the rest of the field so much that she has a better than 50% chance and a minus (-) sign in front of her odds.
Such players are considered the “odds on favorite) and will have at least a 50% chance of winning. This typically does not occur until late in the season, when one player has dominated the competition for most of the season.
Oftentimes, every market will have plus money odds; the market with the shortest odds is considered the betting favorite. However, at most, they have a 50% chance of winning (+100).
In a market with plus-money odds, the odds are how much bettors can win if they bet $100. For example, bet on Paige Bueckers to win the Women’s Wooden Award at +160, and a $100 wager will result in a $260 payout (your stake plus $160 in winnings).
With minus odds, the odds are what bettors will have to wager to win $100. For example, bet on Paige Bueckers to win the Women’s Wooden Award late in the year when she’s a heavy favorite at -700, and you'll need to risk $700 to win $100.
