Eagles vs. Cowboys Picks, Predictions & Player Props: Who Will Start for the Eagles

Published December 28, 2024
7 min read
  • The Cowboys allow 135.9 rushing yards per game

  • Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts is likely to be inactive with a concussion

  • The Cowboys offense has scored 26 points or more in four of their last five games

The 12-3 Philadelphia Eagles will host the 7-8 Dallas Cowboys in Week 17 of the NFL season. The Eagles are in first place in the NFC East, while the Cowboys are in third in the same division. The Eagles are 9-6 against the spread, while the Cowboys are 6-9.

Below are the odds for this game, my best bet, predictions, and best player props.

Eagles vs. Cowboys Predictions and Prop Bets

Eagles vs. Cowboys: My Pick

Given that quarterback Jalen Hurts suffered a concussion, it’s safe to assume he likely won’t suit up this week. Fellow quarterback Kenny Pickett, who filled in for Hurts following the concussion, is also dealing with a rib injury but managed to finish the game.

I believe Pickett will go here. If he does, I believe the Cowboys will cover this number on the road. They’ve scored 27 points in four of their last five games.

The run defense is certainly a concern, but I think they’ll be able to stay within nine against the Pickett-led Eagles offense.

Of course, if Pickett and Hurts are both out and Tanner McKee suits up this 9.5 number will look even better, as I’d expect it to shrink mightily.

Eagles vs. Cowboys Predictions

Don’t look now, but the Cowboys are 4-1 over their last five games, and quarterback Cooper Rush has actually played quite well. Over that stretch, he has nine touchdown passes and just one interception.

His best passing performance came this past week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he threw for 292 yards and completed 74.3% of his passes.

Now, taking on the Eagles on the road is certainly going to be a harder challenge. The Eagles allow 178.8 passing yards per game, second-least in the NFL.

It’s looking like Pickett is in line to start this game. If Hurts suits up, scrap this entire analysis and roll with the Eagles.

However, as mentioned, Hurts is dealing with a concussion, and I can’t recall the last time a player suffered a concussion and played the next week—it doesn’t happen.

In relief of Hurts in Week 16 against the Commanders, Pickett was serviceable. He completed 14 of 24 passes (58.3%) for 143 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He averaged six yards per attempt.

Of course, running back Saquon Barkley led the offense, rushing 29 times for 150 yards and two scores.

The Cowboys boast the sixth-worst run defense, allowing over 135.9 rushing yards per game.

Thus, I think the Eagles game plan will be centered around getting him the ball, which will help this spread, as running the ball helps the clock tick that much faster.

Also, over their last five games, they’ve scored at least 20 in all of them and 26 or more in four of them.

Getting nearly 10 points against a backup quarterback who didn’t look all too great in relief, likely to result in the game plan being centered around running the ball, coupled with a Cowboys offense that’s been playing well lately, seems like a safe bet to me.

I still think the Eagles will win, but the Cowboys will definitely stay within nine.

Eagles win 24-17.

Eagles vs. Cowboys Best Player Props

Saquon Barkley Over 108.5 Rushing Yards (-117) at Caesars Sportsbook

This game is gearing up for Pickett to be the starter, and with that, I expect Barkley to get plenty of work. In relief of Hurts last week, the Pickett-led Eagles offense led to 29 carries for Barkley, his most in any game this season.

The Cowboys allow 135.9 rushing yards per game, the sixth-most in the NFL.

Also, Barkley is less than 300 rushing yards away from breaking the single-season rushing record.

This is a recipe for a massive Barkley game.

CeeDee Lamb Anytime TD (+210) at Caesars Sportsbook

As mentioned, the Cowboys offense has been rolling recently, even with Rush as the quarterback, and Lamb has been part of that.

Over the last three games, Lamb has 22 catches for 314 yards and two touchdowns.

Here, he’ll match up with Eagles rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean.

While DeJean hasn’t allowed a touchdown this season, he has allowed 47 receptions on 67 targets, which is a 70.1% reception rate.

This is going to be a tough matchup for DeJean, and with a player of Lamb’s caliber in a game where the Cowboys will potentially be trailing, I’ll take a chance on Lamb +210.

Jake Elliott Over 7.5 Kicking Points (+104) at Caesars Sportsbook

At +104, this is a great bet.

Elliott has been used frequently lately. He kicked three extra points and four field goals last week and multiple field goals in Week 15.

He’s kicked three or more extra points in five of his last six games.

We also have to consider this offense with Pickett. To get over 7.5 kicking points, it would be two extra points and two field goals. They put up 33 points against the Commander despite a lack of production from Pickett.

This is a game where Barkley could be responsible for two touchdowns while the Eagles advance drives and stall out before scoring.

Against the Commanders, they scored touchdowns on 50% of their red zone trips, so there will likely be chances for Elliott to kick some field goals.

The weather forecast in Philadelphia shows a high of 59 degrees, so weather shouldn’t be much of an issue.
