These two teams are almost in the same position. They both have 48 points, but the Flames have played two fewer games. If the Stars win this game, they will take the Flames spot in the standings.
The Calgary Flames have played well over the last weeks. They have won four of six games, with all but one victory coming handily. They have won by over four goals a game in those four victories.
The Flames have great wingers in Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, solid defensemen in Andrew Mangiapane and Rasmus Andersson, and a great starting goaltender in Jacob Markstrom.
The Dallas Stars have scored a lot over the last week and a half.
They have also given up a lot of goals, but their offense has prevailed most of the time over the last six games. The Stars have three players, Joe Pavelski, Jason Robertson, and Roope Hintz, with at least 16 goals this season.
They have a balanced scoring attack but could do better defensively. They also do not have a clear-cut #1 goalie. Instead, they have two pretty good goalies. They will need one to step up if they want to make a playoff run.
Calgary Flames beat Dallas Stars 3-2. Dallas Stars cover, Under 5.5 goals.

The Calgary Flames are the favorites in this game but will have a tough matchup against the Dallas Stars. If they want to win, they need to continue taking a lot of shots and avoid drawing penalties.
The Flames take a lot of shots. They average 35.9 shots per game and 3.15 goals. They need to continue to shoot and overwhelming the Stars goaltender with shots. Both of the Stars goaltenders are not that great and may be prone to letting a few too many pucks slip past them.
The Dallas Stars have an excellent power-play unit. The Stars power-play unit converts over 26% of the time, fourth-best in the NHL. They have a few consistent scorers on the power-play, which is part of what makes them so dangerous. The Flames need to avoid drawing penalties at all costs. If they do draw penalties, they will give the Stars a really good chance to score.
The Dallas Stars are the underdogs, but they could win this game with a disciplined approach. The Stars need to focus on the Flames’ strengths. They need to limit Calgary’s shots and slow down Johnny Gaudreau.
A little before this, I said that the Flames need to focus on taking a lot of shots. On the other side, the Stars need to figure out how to stop the Flames from taking a lot of shots. The Stars do not have great goaltenders and great defensemen, so the defensemen’s success is imperative to a Stars victory. If the Stars allow the Flames to keep shooting, they will get crushed and lose the game by a lot of goals.
I do not know if I can say anything bad about Johnny Gaudreau. The man affectionately known as “Johnny Hockey” is having another great season and was voted into the All-Star Game again this year.
He has only missed one All-Star Game in his career. I am not going to get into all of his stats (you can find them right below this paragraph), but I will say this: Gaudreau can do it all and cannot be stopped. However, if the Stars defensemen devote enough energy to him, they can slow Gaudreau down.
Left Winger Johnny Gaudreau just makes his team better. Gaudreau has played in every game this season and has 17 goals and 35 assists.
Gaudreau’s overall impact on the Flames is significant. He has a +/- of 29, third-best in the NHL. His team is simply better when he is on the ice. He is coming off a game where he scored his team’s lone goal in a 1-0 overtime victory against the Vancouver Canucks.
He has a lot of momentum from that last game and will be a handful to deal with this game.
Defensively, the Stars defenseman must make Gaudreau priority #1.
Left-winger Roope Hintz is putting together an excellent season for the Stars. The fourth-year player from Finland leads his team with 20 goals. He also has 17 assists and a +/- of 16.
Hintz is playing well right now and has four goals and three assists in the last five games. He is a very well-rounded player who knows when to shoot and when to pass.
Roope Hintz may not have the most points on his team, but he is a talented goal-scorer and a good passer. The Flames defensemen have to watch out for him in the offensive zone, or he might slip one past the goalie.
