Manchester City Are Putting the Heat on Their Title Rivals

Premier League matches do not get much bigger than this. This is not exactly a title decider, but the winner of Sunday's showdown at the Eithad Stadium will be in pole position to finish the season in top spot. Six points separate the two teams at present, but Manchester City have a game in hand on Arsenal. Right now, both teams have their fate in their own hands.

For City, that is a good position to be in. For a while it looked like they would not even get close to the title. Unusually for Pep Guardiola's side, they have not sat at the summit of the standings since the opening weekend. City have been playing catch-up ever since.

When they lost the Manchester derby to Manchester United in the middle of January, City slipped seven points behind Arsenal having played the same number of games. That defeat formed part of a run in which they won just one out of six league fixtures.

City have not lost in the league since then. That is not to say they have been perfect. Draws with Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United - three relegation contenders, no less - were disappointing. But with Arsenal feeling the nerves, City have still been able to apply pressure to the table-toppers.

The 3-0 victory over Chelsea last weekend was a case in point. Arsenal had lost to Bournemouth the previous day, so it was up to City to take advantage. They did exactly that, in emphatic fashion to boot.

“Nine years, all the time being there, defines us a little bit. It’s not just me or some players, it’s the whole structure,” Guardiola said afterwards. “Winning a lot in modern times is so complicated. We have a chance to prove ourselves again next week.”

Arsenal Must Conquer Their Nerves and Deliver at Etihad

Arsenal are in danger of throwing it all away, but they must remember they are still the league leaders and they would have gladly settled for being in this position back in the summer. A victory this weekend would put them on the cusp of winning the title for the first time since 2004.

Yet optimism is in short supply at the Emirates Stadium right now. The anxiety among both the players and the fans is palpable. It was a key factor in the 2-1 loss to Bournemouth last time out. Whereas their opponents played with freedom, Arsenal looked uptight.

There is a sense, too, that Mikel Arteta may have gone too far in moving the team in a more pragmatic direction. Their soccer is not as fluid as it once was and the players have had some of their freedom taken away. Now that they need a dash of inspiration from somewhere, it is lacking.

The EFL Cup final defeat by Manchester City last month was clearly damaging. Arsenal had actually gained ground on City in the preceding set of Premier League fixtures, and they were favorites to triumph at Wembley Stadium. Yet whereas City rose to the occasion, Arsenal froze. They were outplayed in a 2-0 defeat, as City rolled back the years to claim silverware.

Then came a 2-1 loss to Southampton in the FA Cup, followed by the reverse against Bournemouth which means Arsenal have lost three domestic games in a row for the first time since January 2024.

“It's extremely disappointing,” Arteta said after the Bournemouth match. “It is a big punch in the face, but what I said to the boys, now it's about how we react to that, because it's game on, it's going to require now a big spirit, a lot of fight and very clear how we're going to approach that.”

Manchester City Can Halve the Deficit to Arsenal on Sunday

Arsenal may be top of the Premier League, but everything points to a Manchester City victory this weekend. The momentum is undoubtedly with Guardiola’s men, who have a useful habit of peaking at the business end of the season.

City have been there and done it in a way that Arsenal, runners-up in three consecutive campaigns, have not. That experience counts for a lot during the run-in. Hardly anyone inside the Gunners dressing room knows what it takes to win a league title.

City also have home advantage behind them. Arsenal have not won at the Eithad Stadium since Arsene Wenger oversaw a 2-0 victory in January 2015. And although a draw would be a decent result for the north Londoners, halting a rampant City side on home turf is a tall order.

Most significantly of all, City simply look like a better team than Arsenal at the moment. The Gunners were at their best in the first half of the season, whereas City have been superior in recent weeks. That bodes well for the latter’s title chances, and for their hopes of triumphing this weekend. Back Manchester City to beat Arsenal in this one.
