Younger, Hungrier Arsenal Are Moving in the Right Direction

Arsenal have also made tangible progress in recent months. This always felt like a significant season for Mikel Arteta, who needed to show that his project was worth persevering for. Many scoffed at Arsenal’s transfer business last summer, but the decision-makers have been proved correct, with the likes of Aaron Ramsdale, Martin Odegaard, and Ben White all impressing. Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, two academy graduates, symbolize this fresh, vibrant, new-look Arsenal side.

Qualifying for the Champions League would be a fantastic achievement for Arsenal. Few tipped them to do so at the start of the season, but Arteta’s charges occupy the fourth spot at present.

Question marks remain, however. This is a young team, and a relative lack of experience could be a factor at the business end of the campaign. There are also doubts over the defense: Arsenal are sixth-bottom of the Premier League for expected goals against, which shows they are conceding high-quality chances to their opponents.

It is in games like this that Arsenal’s fate could be decided. So far, they have not fared particularly well against the top teams in the division. The Gunners have lost to Chelsea, Manchester City (twice), Liverpool, and Manchester United. They did beat Tottenham in September in what was arguably their best performance of the campaign to date, but an away game against a side managed by Conte will be a much more challenging assignment on Sunday.

This Could Be an Intense, Engaging Affair Between Old Rivals

Tottenham vs Arsenal tends to produce the most open, entertaining games of the Premier League’s biggest grudge matches. The last goalless draw between them was in February 2009; the one before that was in November 1998. Moreover, four of their last five meetings have featured more than 2.5 goals.

There is reason to believe this could be a tighter affair, however. Arsenal will be content to keep things tight at the back in the first half, especially while Tottenham’s three-man defense means they are unlikely to be caught cold on the counter-attack. Spurs have only scored two goals in their last two Premier League games, and Conte would certainly settle for a narrow win.

That looks like the most probable outcome. Arsenal have come on leaps and bounds in recent months, but there is still a vulnerability to them in big games like this. Tottenham will come flying out of the traps, and Arsenal will come under significant pressure as Conte’s side press aggressively and look to overwhelm them.

A victory for either team would be a massive boost to their top-four chances. If Arsenal gets it, they would put breathing space between themselves and Spurs – for now at least. But if the hosts triumph, as we expect them to, they will become the new favorites for fourth place.
