You do not need to necessarily be a soccer expert to know what Borussia Dortmund’s main problem has been this season. Marco Rose’s men have scored 64 goals in their 24 Bundesliga matches – an excellent average of 2.66 per game. Even without Erling Haaland, who has suffered a stop-start 2022 due to injury, BVB have continued to find the net for fun. It does not feel like an exaggeration to say that Dortmund currently have one of the best attacks in the European game.
But scoring goals is only one part of soccer. Keeping them out is just as important, but Dortmund have struggled in that regard all season long. It was always going to be difficult to compete for the Bundesliga title given Bayern Munich’s significant financial advantage, but the thing that has prevented Dortmund keeping pace with Julian Nagelsmann’s side is their shoddy defensive record.
Dortmund’s backline has been breached on 37 occasions. Remarkably, their upcoming opponents have a better defensive record despite battling against demotion to the second tier.
Dortmund’s propensity to implode has cost them dearly on several occasions this term, not least in their recent defeat by Rangers in the Europa League. That was a competition BVB looked to have a good chance of winning, yet their inability to keep things tight saw them eliminated before the round of 16.
Dortmund are eight points behind Bayern Munich having played one game fewer, but it is hard to see them overhauling the perennial champions between now and the end of the campaign. Premature exits from the Europa League and the DFB-Pokal have left Dortmund with little to play for in the coming weeks, but Rose will be keen to use the time to strike a better balance between attack and defense ahead of a potential title tilt next term.
A superior defensive record to high-flying Borussia Dortmund has not been enough to pull Arminia Bielefeld clear of danger at the wrong end of the table. Frank Kramer’s side are currently three points clear of the bottom two and two points above the relegation play-off place, which is currently occupied by Hertha Berlin. Their battle against relegation could go right down to the wire.
Arminia’s primary issue has been the opposite of Dortmund’s. No team in the division has scored fewer goals than Kramer’s men, who have made the net bulge just 22 times in their 25 outings. They have also drawn more matches than anyone else in the Bundesliga, having been held to a point on 10 occasions.
The last few weeks have largely been disappointing for Arminia, although they are in a much better position now than they were in early December. A six-match unbeaten run either side of the winter break lifted them clear of trouble, but Kramer’s side have since lost three of their last four matches to get dragged back into danger.
Staying up would be a fine achievement. Few expected Arminia to do so last season, but they ultimately finished one place and two points clear of the play-off spot. Everyone connected with the club would settle for the same outcome this term.
It is far too early to say that Borussia Dortmund have turned a corner, but there have been signs in recent weeks that they are beginning to have more success defensively.
A 3-0 victory at the home ground of Union Berlin in the middle of last month was surprisingly routine. Dortmund then thrashed Borussia Monchengladbach 6-0, before conceding their only goal in their last three league games in a 1-1 draw with Augsburg.
It is only just over a month since Dortmund shipped five goals at home to Bayer Leverkusen, while they conceded six times to Rangers across two legs shortly after. Yet against a shot-shy Arminia Bielefeld, a clean sheet is well within reach for BVB.
Arminia, for their part, have failed to score in three of their last four games, drawing blanks against Hoffenheim, Bayer Leverkusen and Augsburg. They have scored just 10 goals in their 12 away games to date and may struggle to get enough of the ball to cause Dortmund problems on Sunday.
Dortmund’s chances of winning the title this season are slim, with Bayern Munich unlikely to drop too many more points between now and the middle of May. But Rose and his players will want to get as close to the top spot as possible, and this should be a relatively comfortable 90 minutes for them.
