Los Angeles FC are the heavy favorites going into their round of 16 clash against Real Salt Lake on Tuesday. The match will take place at Los Angeles FC’s home ground, the BMO Stadium, where they have lost only once against Real Salt Lake.
The match fitness concerns of Los Angeles FC’s players were swept aside after the side thrashed FC Juarez 7-1 in the Round of 32. The knockout match was their first competitive game since the MLS broke on July 16. Being the top seed from the MLS, Los Angeles FC secured direct qualification to the knockout stage.
Real Salt Lake will be hoping to repeat their performance from their round of 32 encounters against CONCACAF Champions League winners Club Leon, where they came back from a goal down to secure a 3-1 victory.
The two teams have faced off 14 times so far, and a mouthwatering 15th encounter is all but guaranteed as there have been no draws between the two so far. Los Angeles FC dominates the head-to-head record against Real Salt Lake with 14 victories and just two losses.
Real Salt Lake have recorded only one away victory against the defending champions in six meetings at the BMO Stadium. The victory came in their MLS encounter in 2018. The encounter between these two teams will surely be goals galore, with Los Angeles FC leading the goal-scoring chart by 34-15.
Los Angeles FC should not expect a cakewalk heading into this tie despite a dominant head-to-head record. They have only played one game in the Leagues Cup so far, whereas Real Salt Lake have got a few matches under their belt, winning two and losing one. The odds are stacked strongly against Real Salt Lake in this game, but they managed to secure a comeback against Club Leon to make it to the last 16.
Los Angeles FC set a club record by netting seven goals against Liga MX side FC Juarez in the first knockout round. This tied the record for the biggest victory for the club, having recorded a six-goal margin win over Vancouver Whitecaps three years ago.
Their seven goals were also the most by any side in a Leagues Cup match, with five being the previous record, which was achieved on three previous occasions.
The defending MLS champions are in great goalscoring form this season and have won all of their inaugural matches in four different competitions: MLS Regular Season, CONCACAF Champions League, U.S. Open Cup, and the Leagues Cup.
In the last six games before their 2023 Leagues Cup knockout match, Los Angeles FC recorded only one victory. They lost to Vancouver Whitecaps, FC Dallas, and arch-rivals LA Galaxy, and drew against San Jose Earthquakes and Minnesota United. Their only victory came against St. Louis City SC before they were held to a draw by Minnesota United right before the MLS break.
Los Angeles FC are second in the MLS table with 37 points from 23 games and had a chance to go atop the table had they not lost so many points right before the break. Their performance in the Leagues Cup was doubtful, given their poor form; however, they proved the naysayers wrong by blowing away the challenge from FC Juarez.
Los Angeles FC’s great goalscoring form this season is largely credited to two names - Dennis Bouanga and Carlos Vela. Bouanga added three more goals to his season's tally of 12 against FC Juarez. He also bagged another assist.
Meanwhile, Carlos Vela added another two goals to his four and another assist to his eight this season. Vela has now found the back of the net in all three of his previous games, including games against St. Louis City SC and Minnesota United in the MLS, before scoring against FC Juarez in the Leagues Cup.
Real Salt Lake has lost only one game since the start of June. They have recorded nine wins and three draws and just one loss in their previous ten games. They head into the Round of 16 clash against Los Angeles FC, having won four of their last five games, losing just that solitary game against CF Monterrey.
They ousted Club Leon in the Round of 32 after trailing 1-0 until the 69th minute. Goals from Musovski and Chicho Arango in a span of 12 minutes in the final quarter of the game helped them secure passage to the second knockout round.
Danny Musovski netted a brace that helped Real Salt Lake come from behind to take the lead against Club Leon. He now has nine goals and five assists in all competitions this season. With his brace, Musovski also tied Jefferson Severino as Real Salt Lake’s top-scorer.
The pair are the only players to have scored goal in all competitions this season - MLS, U.S. Open Cup, and Leagues Cup. Coach Pablo Mastroeni will be banking on his star duo to get on the scoresheet against Los Angeles FC.
Pablo Ruiz is another player who is in great form, with four goals and four assists in the MLS so far. He has also bagged one assist in the Leagues Cup this year.
Real Salt Lake have failed to win in the last seven encounters against Log Angeles FC. They have beaten Los Angeles FC away only once in 2018. Now, the defending MLS champions stand in the way of Pablo Mastroeni’s men and the Leagues Cup Round of 16.
Despite their great form in recent weeks, the poor record against Los Angeles FC will be a cause of concern for their coach as well as their fans. Their hopes will be bolstered by the victory over Club Leon, who defeated Los Angeles FC in the CONCACAF Champions League final earlier this season.
