While the Astros bats have been coming alive, they were quiet last night, and we don’t see that changing against Chris Bassitt tonight. The Blue Jays pitcher has held opponents scoreless in four of his last six games, including his previous start. That is enough for them to get the win, but we like the run line with reliever Ronel Blanco getting the start for Houston. Expect Toronto to put up a lot of runs as they cruise to a lopsided victory.
The Astros took some time to get going in 2023, but they have now won 14 of their last 20 games. The streak has been impressive, but it came crashing down last night against Toronto. They managed just four hits against Kevin Gausman, and things won’t be much easier tonight with Bassitt on the mound. That would make this a challenging game to win by itself, but the Astros will also send a reliever to the mound to start tonight, making the run line the best bet.
Reliever Ronel Blanco (1-0, 4.15 ERA) will get a spot start for the Astros tonight. The reliever has had some bumps this season, especially on the road, where he owns an 11.25 ERA. His start against the Angels last week was rocky, holding them to two runs but allowing seven hits and three walks over 5 ⅓ innings. You can’t do that against this impressive Toronto lineup, and it will cost him tonight.
The Houston offense is no stranger to Bassitt, as they have a combined 134 at-bats against the starter. However, they own a .226 average against the veteran. Kyle Tucker, Jose Altuve, and Jose Abreu have all struggled against Bassitt, which means they could be in for another long night tonight. Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez have seen the Jays start well in the past, but they won’t be able to do enough to make up for the hole Blanco will dig for them.
The Blue Jays come into tonight’s matchup winners of five of their previous six games. They are under a lot of pressure to stay hot as they fight for positioning in the loaded AL East. We like their chances to add another win tonight, thanks mainly to the matchup we will have on the mound. Considering their recent success against some of the league's top teams, we expect them to keep the momentum going tonight.
Chris Bassitt (6-4, 3.41 ERA) is having one of his best seasons at 34 years old. While he struggled in April, the veteran posted an impressive 2.43 ERA in May. He kept that momentum going in his first start of June, holding the Mets to three hits and zero runs over 7 ⅔ innings. He now has four scoreless starts over his last six games, showing just how dominant he has been. He has had success against the Astros in the past, and that will continue tonight.
The Blue Jays' offense has been fantastic around their young core. They are second in the league in batting average and fourth in on-base percentage. They have been led by monster seasons from Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr, who have both played their way into the MVP conversation. They have also had outfielder Daulton Varsho finally getting hot, giving them yet another weapon in this talented lineup. Those bats shouldn’t have an issue taking care of Blanco and the Astros bullpen, leading to an easy win.
