It’s a battle between the cream of the crop as the best pitchers and hitters are set to duel it out in the 2024 All Star game. Pittsburgh Pirates rookie sensation Paul Skenes is set to take the mound for the NL while the Baltimore Orioles Corbin Burnes straps up for the AL. Both elite talents in their own right, yet both are susceptible to getting beat early against an equally impressive group of batters.

For the first time since 1995, a rookie pitcher will be starting in the All Star game when Paul Skenes takes the mound for the National League. The Skenes hype train has hit unparalleled levels of excitement since making his start a few weeks into the season, now being listed as the heavy favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year award while climbing up the oddsboard for the NL Cy Young as well.
Skenes has been dominant in his 11 appearances so far this season, entering the All Star break with an ERA of 1.90, a WHIP of 0.920, a FIP of 2.57, 89 Total Strikeouts, 13 Batters Walked, 48 Hits Against, and just 14 Earned Runs Allowed. Skenes possesses an elite blend of power and accuracy, blowing past opposing batters and creating Whiffs at a high rate.
While his hyper aggressiveness has resulted in resounding success in the regular season, it may come back to bite him when he faces off against the American League top of their order. Especially with the Cleveland Guardians Steven Kwan kicking things off, boasting elite contact ability with a Batting Average of 0.306.
Should Kwan get on base from the jump, that applies serious pressure to Skenes as he is set to face off against three elite sluggers after him. Two of those sluggers are the Yankees lethal duo of Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, a pair of MVP caliber talents in their own right. Soto excels at getting on base at a high rate with his ability to extend at bats with his patience while Judge continues to terrorize every baseball hung across the plate as the current league leader in Home Runs.
As for the American League, they surprised the nation by announcing Corbin Burnes would be starting over current AL Cy Young betting favorite Tarik Skubal. That’s not to say Burnes does not deserve to be here, but it is worth noting that Skubal ranks better in ERA, WHIP, FIP, Total Strikeouts, Batters Walked, Hits Against, and Earned Runs Allowed.
Burnes WHIP of 1.045 is especially inviting to fade against as it indicates at least one batter is getting on base per inning. It’s safe to say negative regression will swing towards our favor as the talent he is set to throw against is of elite caliber as opposed to regular season top of the orders that may feature only one or two above average productive batters at best.
Should the Diamondbacks Ketel Marte find success from the opening pitch, then the rest of the top of the order only gets more daunting with current MVP favorite Shohei Ohtani, two time Total Hits leader Trea Turner, and power slugger Bryce Harper following after. Each of the three have been masterful this season, possessing a Batting Average no lower than 0.300 while getting on base at a near 0.400 clip.
