The Toronto Blue Jays will go head to head with the New York Yankees for the first game of a four-game series. These teams are in the same division, so they face each other quite a bit; this will be the 13th Blue Jays-Yankees game this season.
The Blue Jays have a 62-54 record and are sitting in second place in the AL East. They are tied for the second Wild Card spot with the Tampa Bay Rays. They are not having an incredible season, but they have defied expectations by being in the Playoff hunt. On the other side, the Yankees are going through their most brutal stretch of the season. They have only won four of their last 15 games, but their dominant play earlier in the season has kept them in first place in the AL East. They have a 73-45 record and a 10-game lead over the Rays and Blue Jays.
Both of these teams are coming off wins last night. The Blue Jays crushed the Orioles 6-1, and the Yankees pulled off an 8-7 victory in ten innings. Ross Stripling threw a gem for Toronto. He was perfect through six innings until he gave up his first (and only) hit. He got pulled with one out in the 7th inning, but the Blue Jays ‘pen did well and only gave up one run in the ninth. Orioles’ starting pitcher Austin Voth also pitched very well, only giving up two hits in six innings. Unfortunately for Baltimore, the bullpen could not hold it down; they gave up six runs in the 7th inning and pitched themselves out of the game.
The Yankees got their first win yesterday in four games. The score was tied at four going into the 10th inning, but the Yankees’ bullpen gave up three runs in the tenth. That did not seem to matter, though, as Josh Donaldson crushed a walk-off grand slam to give New York a much-needed victory.
Initially, I was going to pick the Blue Jays to win, but after further research, I decided to go with the Yankees. This is mainly for two reasons: momentum and starting pitching. The Yankees won their game dramatically last night and might have ended their slump. They are facing a tough team in the Blue Jays, but the clubhouse is excited now, and the tide has likely turned. Regarding their starting pitching, New York is bringing a better pitcher to the mound. Frankie Montas will get the start for the Yankees, and Jose Berrios will take the mound for Toronto. Montas has a troubling record of 4-9, but his ERA is pretty low at 3.59. On the other hand, Berrios has a solid record of 8-5, but his play has been inconsistent, and his ERA is 5.61.
Jose Berrios has had a few too many troubling performances, and I cannot bet on him to bring his best stuff tonight. Bet on the Yankees’ moneyline.
The over/under for this game is 8.5 runs. I am surprised the oddsmakers put the over/under this high, and I have to go with the under.
The Yankees’ hitting has been strong all season but struggling lately. I think they will take advantage of Jose Berrios’ pitching and score four against him and one more run against the Blue Jays’ bullpen. On the other side, I expect Toronto to score three runs. They have some very impressive hitters in Vladimir Guerroro Jr., Bo Bichette, Matt Chapman, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. These four players will string together some hits and put a few runs on the board. Bet on the under.

This game should be interesting because of the Yankees’ game last night. I would not be surprised if the Yankees’ slump is over, and they return to their winning ways.
I would watch out for Josh Donaldson in this game. He has been having a mediocre season but is coming off hitting a walk-off grand slam last night. I do not expect him to hit another grand slam, but he will get on base two or three times.
On Toronto’s side, I would pay attention to Alejandro Kirk and Vladimir Guerroro Jr. Kirk has a knack for getting on base and leads Toronto with a .380 on-base percentage, and Guerrero Jr.s’ 126 hits are tied for the 11th-most in the league.
Bet on the Yankees’ moneyline, Yankees to cover the spread, and on the under.
