While this is not the Julio Teheran of old, the veteran has looked fantastic in his return to the big leagues. On the other side, the Diamondbacks will be starting Zac Gallen, who has established himself as one of the top pitchers in baseball. Combine that matchup with the fact that both offenses have struggled during day games, and this is an easy bet to make.
The Diamondbacks (44-30) have far surpassed the expectations set for them in the offseason. A big reason for that has been their offense, who rank in the top five in the league in batting average (.264) and RBIs (362). However, Arizona has struggled a bit in games like the one they have today. They own a .243 batting average in day games this season and a .257 average on the road. While those aren’t overly bad, they will be a problem against the red-hot Julio Teheran today.
We are very confident that Diamondbacks ace Zac Gallen (8-2, 2.96 ERA) will be in for a fantastic start today. He has been good throughout the season, although he has had a few hiccups after posting a 2.15 ERA in April. Gallen has allowed more than two earned runs just once over his last five starts and is coming off one of his best showings against the Guardians. The Brewers’ offense is streaky and has fallen victim to many pitchers far worse than Gallen this season. We see him putting up one of his season's best stat lines against the Crew today.
Our player to watch for Arizona is Corbin Carroll (.304 BA, 16 HR, 39 RBI). The 22-year-old has been incredible this season, but he has cooled off a bit of late. He has a .231 batting average over the last week and will face Teheran for the first time. Add that to the fact that Lourdes Gurriel Jr (.280 BA, 11 HR, 42 RBI) owns a .163 batting average in June, and you can see why we expect to see a quiet game.
I can’t tell you if the Brewers (38-35) are good, but I can tell you that their offense cannot be relied upon. They are twenty-ninth in the league in batting average (.227), twenty-sixth in RBIs (279), and seventeenth in home runs (81). On top of that, they own a run differential of -24. The Crew relies on their pitching to win games, which will again be the case tonight. Look for Milwaukee’s bats to go cold, leading to a close but low-scoring game.
Julio Teheran (2-2, 1.78) has had a fantastic start to his MLB comeback. The veteran was signed by Milwaukee earlier this season and has not disappointed. He has a quality start in four of his five games the season and would be 5-5 if the Brewers hadn’t limited him to five innings in his first appearance. Teheran has not allowed more than two earned runs in a game this season, and we see that trend continuing today.
Our player to watch is Willy Adames (.202 BA, 10 HR, 28 RBI). The Brewers shortstop is having an awful season, with all of his stats dipping well below his career numbers. He looked better last night, but the slugger still owns a .186 batting average in June with one home run and one RBI. Adames is expected to be the heart of this lineup, and his absence is a big reason the Brewers' offense has been so bad in 2023. The veteran is 0-8 against Gallen over his career, which has us believing he will be in for another quiet night.
