Dodgers vs Diamondbacks Moneyline Analysis
The Los Angeles Dodgers will take on the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first game of a four-game series. These teams faced each other in the Opening Series and split it 2-2. The Dodgers won games one and three by scores of 8-2 and 10-1, and the Diamondbacks won games two and four 2-1 each time.
The Dodgers are crushing home runs through their first week of the season. In six games, Los Angeles has an insane 13 home runs. I do not expect them to continue hitting dingers at this pace, but their lineup is filled with a lot of power. The Dodgers did not have the most impressive off-season. They signed J.D. Martinez but lost Trea and Justin Turner (not related). Still, their lineup has Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Max Muncy. Betts and Freeman are two top ten players and both in the NL MVP race. They have consistently been threats at the plate for many years now. In addition, Betts has serious speed around the base paths. Smith and Muncy are not as good, but they get on base a good bit. Overall, the Dodgers have one of the best lineups in the National League.
Dustin May will take the mound for the Dodgers. The 25-year-old dominated in his first start of the season and threw seven scoreless innings against the Diamondbacks. His control was solid, as he only gave up one walk. This is an encouraging sign since May only started six games last season and finished with a 4.50 ERA. I do not expect the righty to throw another seven scoreless innings, but he will have a strong performance.
The Diamondbacks have had some trouble hitting the ball over the first week of the season and have a .224 team batting average. They have only scored 19 runs and have had trouble hitting the long ball. Even though the Diamondbacks have a couple of power hitters, they have only hit four home runs in six games. However, I would not be too concerned if I were a Diamondbacks fan. Arizona has a lineup filled with the likes of Christian Walker, Ketel Marte, Josh Rojas, and Evan Longoria. All in all, Arizona’s lineup does not stack up to the Dodgers’ lineup, but it is one of the better ones in the MLB.
Merrill Kelly will get the nod for the Diamondbacks. Kelly only threw 3⅔ innings in his first start this season. He did not give up any runs but walked four batters and was pulled after throwing 74 pitches. Kelly is a solid pitcher, but he did not have his best stuff in that game. The 34-year-old is coming off the best season of his career, but he struggled in the final month of the 2022 season. In his final start, he gave up eight earned runs and finished with a 5.40 ERA in August. He may have some issues getting through the Dodgers lineup the third time around.
The Dodgers' lineup is hitting much better than the Diamondbacks’, and they are sending an impressive Dustin May to the mound. They will not crush the Diamondbacks, but they will beat them. Bet on Los Angeles.
Dodgers vs Diamondbacks Over/Under Analysis
The over/under for this game is placed at 8.5 runs. This is pretty high, as only one game has a higher over/under today. 8.5 runs is simply too high, and I do not recommend betting on it. Bet on the under.
As I mentioned before, the Dodgers’ lineup is full of good hitters. Those hitters will put up a few runs on Merrill Kelly. Kelly is a good pitcher, but the Dodgers have a ton of star power in their lineup and will make Kelly pay for his mistakes. Los Angeles will also punish the Diamondbacks’ bullpen for two runs. The Arizona bullpen has been decent this season but does have the propensity to give up a few runs.
The Diamondbacks will lose this game but score three runs in the process. Christian Walker will likely play a role in their scoring. Arizona will score two runs off Dustin May. May is a solid pitcher, but I do not expect him to throw two consecutive scoreless outings. That is not a fair expectation, given the strength of this Diamondbacks’ lineup. The Dodgers’ bullpen will also give up a run to the Diamondbacks. Los Angeles has one of the better bullpens in the league and has a 2.76 ERA through the first week, but they will give up one run in two or three innings.
