Both teams come into this game desperate for a series win to break out of their respective slumps. Unfortunately for the Yankees, the Guardians will send out their ace against a struggling New York offense. On top of that, the Guardians have a combined .462 batting average against Yankee starter Clarke Schmidt, who has been getting shelled in 2023. We love the Guardians to get a big series win tomorrow.
Cleveland (14-16) came into the season with high hopes, but they have struggled to get wins. The offense has been unable to find consistency, but that will change tonight. This Guardians team knows Clarke Schmidt well, and the pitcher is having a brutal start to 2023. He is struggling to keep runners off the bases, and it is resulting in short starts and a lot of losses. The Guardians have been bad on offense, but some hitters are starting to heat up. We believe that will continue, as will Schmidts’ struggles.
Shane Bieber (2-1, 3.11 ERA) seems to be on track for another great season at the top of Cleveland's rotation. He has five quality starts in his six games, which is the second-best total in the MLB. Four of those starts came on the road, where the veteran pitcher owns a 2.88 ERA. With numbers like that, we see him shutting down this sputtering Yankees offense tonight.
The Guardians' offense is loaded with talent, but they are struggling to generate consistent offense. They are twenty-sixth in the league in batting average (.229) and runs (111) and twenty-ninth in home runs (17). It’s been bad, but that will change tonight against Schmidt. Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, and Josh Naylor have been cruising the ball lately, with Naylor totaling eight RBIs in his last seven games. Expect them to stay hot tonight as the Guardians get the win.
The Yankees (16-15) started the season strong but have now lost seven of their last ten games. The most shocking problem has been their offense, as they have scored more than two runs just once in their previous five games. They have the power but have not been able to hit for average. There are a lot of holes emerging on the roster, and that is going to cost them against Bieber tonight.
Clarke Schmidt (0-3, 6.84 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees tonight. He has struggled this season, with zero quality starts and zero wins. He is coming off one of his worst games, giving up ten hits and five earned runs over five innings. That has been pretty standard for Schmidt this season, as his starts have been short and turbulent. Now he’ll need to try to bounce back against a Guardians team that has hit him well in the past. Opponents have scored three or more runs against Schmidt in both of his starts, and that trend will continue tonight.
The Yankees' offense has a ton of power, but they are twenty-seventh in the league in batting average (.225). That hasn’t shown any signs of improving, as they have posted a .226 average over their last seven games. That won’t get better tonight with Bieber on the mound and Aaron Judge (.261 BA, 6 HR, 14 RBI) out of the lineup. The Yankees’ slugger landed on the IL last week just as he was heating up. Judge had a .400 average over his previous seven games, making him the Yankees' hottest bat. With him out, there just isn’t enough in the lineup to take on Bieber and a solid Cleveland bullpen.
