We’ll take the over in this contest between the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies from the Bronx. There are a couple of factors at play here that really speak to the over being the play, with the hitting and pitching situations for both teams likely to send this game into double digits from a scoring perspective.
First, it cannot be denied that the Philadelphia Phillies have been just brutal from a pitching perspective so far this year. They have allowed 37 runs in their first four games of this season, going 0-4 in those contests. Against one of the most potent lineups in Major League Baseball, we should see the Phillies give up some runs once again here.
Philadelphia’s bats should also contribute to this total, though, as they are batting .287 as a team. That ranks fifth in Major League Baseball so far, and the Phillies should be able to take their cuts here against Domingo German, who is making his first start of the season for New York. German allowed right around a hit per inning last season, and Philadelphia should get plenty of looks to put runs of their own on the board.
The start of the 2023 MLB season has been a massive disappointment for the Philadelphia Phillies. They won the National League last season, but have not been able to get off the ground in 2023, losing each of their first four games. But it is not just that they have lost those games, it is how they have been losing, as the Phillies have been struggling mightily to get anyone out.
Through their first four games, the Phillies have given up the most runs in the league, even more than all of the teams that have played a fifth game. To try and mitigate that on Tuesday night, the Phillies are sending reliever Matt Strahm to the mound, as it is a bullpen day for them. Strahm has pitched once already this season, throwing a scoreless inning in the team’s Opening Day loss to the Rangers.
It will be interesting to see how far into this game Strahm can go, as he never went more than two innings in a game last season. That means a lot of work for the rest of the Phillies' bullpen, which has not meant good things for them so far this year. Philly has a bullpen ERA of 11.30 entering Tuesday’s action, a number demonstrably worse than any other bullpen in the league.
The New York Yankees are off to a fast start to their 2023 season, winning three of their first four games. They won two out of three against the San Francisco Giants in their first series of the year, before winning their series opener with the Phillies on Monday. As expected, the Yankees lineup has delivered offensively, but it has been their pitching staff that has impressed in the first week of the year.
Through four games, the Yankees have allowed a total of eight runs, posting two shutouts along the way. In their three wins on the year, the Bronx Bombers have given up a total of one run, which speaks to how well their bullpen has performed with a lead early on. Here, Domingo German will look to pitch well early on to help give the Yankees another lead to work with on Tuesday night.
Unsurprisingly, the offense of the Yankees so far this season has been powered largely by the home run. They have nine home runs as a team so far this season, putting them in a tie for second in the league behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Aaron Judge has two of those home runs, and he comes into this game at +235 to add to his home run total in this game at FanDuel Sportsbook.
