Tennessee vs. Oklahoma Picks, Predictions and Odds: Expect the Sooners Offense to Struggle to Score

  • Oklahoma bounced back with a 34-19 win over Tulane last week

  • Tennessee has won their first three games by a combined score of 191-13

  • The Vols defense ranks top-10 in Success Rate, Finishing Drives, Havoc, and Explosiveness

With a new face under center, the Oklahoma Sooners offense has got off to a rough start due to their lack of pass production. While quarterback Jackson Arnold deserves a majority of the blame due to his tendency of favoring the conservative throw, he has also had to play behind a decimated offensive line. With Tennessee’s defense firing on all cylinders, getting into scoring territory may once again be tough to come by for the Sooners offense.

Tennessee vs Oklahoma Predictions

Tennessee vs. Oklahoma Pick

Even with two starting offensive linemen expected to make their return from injury, it’s tough to envision how Oklahoma will consistently move the ball down the field against a Volunteers defense who ranks top-10 in Def Success Rate, Finishing Drives, Havoc, and Explosiveness. Especially with Arnold struggling to stretch the field due to his tendency to favor the short throw, allowing the Volunteers to cheat up in coverage and smother the flats.

Tennessee vs. Oklahoma Predictions

Tennessee Predictions

After entering the season projected to take a step back in a top-heavy NCAAF SEC conference, the Volunteers have swiftly thrown their hat in the ring as a viable NCAAF National Championship title contender. Granted their first three wins came against inferior competition, yet they have looked every bit the part of a team who can make a deep run in the playoffs based on their advanced metrics.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava has also lived up to expectations as a highly touted recruit, leading the Volunteers offense to top-25 marks in Off Pass Success Rate and PPA while averaging 10.4 yards per completion. Against the Sooners' defense, Iamaleava will be in a position to continue to carve up opposing secondaries as Oklahoma’s back end has struggled with defending against the short throw. In three games played, the Sooners defense ranks 88th overall in Def Pass Success Rate.

Being able to find success through the air is vital for their offense as Oklahoma’s front seven ranks top-10 in Def Rush Success Rate, PPA, and Explosiveness. Still, the Sooners' struggles in coverage alone gives enough conviction that the Vols should be able to move the ball down the field through the air at a consistent rate. The Vols' offensive success is key for the Sooners' team total under as prolonged drives will help drain the clock and limit the number of offensive possessions for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma Predictions

Even though the Sooners are 3-0, it has been a roller coaster of a start to the season for them. After thumping the lowly Temple Owls in their season opener 51-3, Oklahoma barely survived against the Houston Cougars by squeaking out a 16-14 victory. The Sooners did seemingly round back into form against Tulane, yet it was still uninspiring when digging deep into their offensive metrics.

If there has been one constant factor in all three contests, it’s quarterback Jackson Arnold struggling to get the Sooners' pass attack playing at a competitive level. Entering Saturday’s top-25 SEC matchup against Tennessee, Arnold is averaging just 5.6 yards per completion while the Sooners' pass attack as a whole ranks 121st in Pass Success Rate and Pass PPA. Their Explosiveness does tick up to 51st overall, but the Vols secondary excels at limiting the big play as they rank top-10 in Def Pass Explosiveness.

With an inability to stretch out the Vols secondary through the air, the Sooners offense will struggle to sustain drives down the field and get into scoring position. Especially without the support of a productive ground game as Oklahoma ranks 94th in Rush Success Rate and 72nd in Rush PPA. With minimal scoring opportunities, as well as Tennessee chewing up the clock with prolonged drives, bet the Sooners team total under at no lower than the key number of 24.
