After their ridiculously dominant road performance against Arizona, the Duke Blue Devils now turn their attention to the No. 1 team in the country: Kansas.
The Blue Devils are fresh off a game in which they were able to hold a high-octane Arizona team to 55 points on 39.6% field-goal shooting and 26.1% from 3-point range.
Further, they forced Arizona to commit 15 turnovers and outrebounded the Wildcats by 13 boards.
In the two games since the Blue Devils’ loss to Kentucky, they have appeared to be virtually unstoppable, crushing Wofford by 51 points and a ranked Arizona team by double-digits on the road.
After those two performances, it shouldn’t be surprising that Duke is now ranked first in adjusted defensive efficiency, per KenPom.
However, this will be the Blue Devils’ biggest test yet, as Kansas is loaded with talent at every position and is one of the deepest squads in the country.
A perfect example of the Jayhawks’ depth is that they can bring a talented wing like AJ Storr off the bench. Storr was one of the best players in the Big Ten Tournament last season, but he’s not even starting for Kansas. Wild.
While this seems like a no-brainer spot to back Kansas, as it is a 3.5-point dog on a neutral floor despite being the top-ranked team in the country, I have my reservations.
The Jayhawks let a slightly above-average (by their standards) Tar Heels team hang around and stay within three points on their home floor; Kansas also has not been crushing mediocre teams to begin the season, and it should be doing just that with this roster.
Simply put, I’m not sold on Kansas.
The Blue Devils also have a fantastic interior defensive weapon in 7-foot-2 center Khaman Maluach.
Maluach won’t stop All-American Hunter Dickinson, but he could contain him. After all, how many physical, rim-protecting 7-foot-2 centers are there in college basketball? The answer is not very many.
I’ll roll with Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils, who have proven elite on the defensive end. The Jayhawks are still too much of a “work in progress” to feel comfortable backing it against what could be the best team in the country.

Nebraska steamrolled the Creighton Bluejays in one of the most unexpected games thus far in the 2024-25 regular season.
Besides the unranked Cornhuskers crushing the Bluejays by double-digits, something even more remarkable happened: Nebraska held Ryan Kalkbrenner, one of the best centers in college basketball, to a single field goal attempt.
Kalkbrenner, who had 49 points on 20-for-22 shooting from the field in his first game of the season, was limited to just four points in 39 minutes of play, exposing a significant weakness for the Bluejays.
The question for Creighton is whether it will be able to find ways to get Kalkbrenner the ball if opponents are doubling entry passes and forcing other players to make plays and knock down shots.
Matters only get messier for the Bluejays on Tuesday, as they will have to take on the San Diego State Aztecs, who rank 22nd nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency so far this season.
In fact, San Diego State is comparable to Nebraska in terms of physicality and defensive-centricity.
Ultimately, I’m not sure Creighton has had enough time to make significant changes to its offense, allowing the Aztecs to use a similar defensive approach to Nebraska.
San Diego State will emphasize keeping the ball out of Kalkbrenner’s hands and contesting 3-point shots, which it has historically done at a high level.
