Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz and his 2-4 Indianapolis Colts seem to be figuring themselves out winning two of their last three matchups and now that star playmaking receiver TY Hilton (quadriceps, questionable) is possibly back in the lineup, expect Frank Reich’s Colts improving offense to start playing at the level at which they are capable.
Fresh off their Week 6 bye, the 2-3 San Francisco 49ers should be feeling energized and though both QBs are still listed as questionable – Jimmy Garoppolo (calf) and Trey Lance (knee) – it looks like Jimmy G will get the nod while his Niner’s sixth-ranked defense led by DEs Nick Bosa and Arik Armstead do their best to make Wentz’s Sunday evening a nightmare.
These two cross-conference rivals have faced each other 45 prior times, with the San Francisco 49ers winning 19 of those games and the Indianapolis Colts winning 26 of the games.
Colts vs 49ers Week 7 Predictions
Can Colts QB Carson Wentz and WR TY Hilton Become a Thing?
Colts’ new quarterback Carson Wentz started his season out slow with three straight losses, but now he and head coach Frank Reich seem to have figured out the team’s game plan and the veteran QB has thrown for two touchdowns in each of the last three games with no interceptions.
Now they face a San Francisco defense that’s currently ranked sixth in the league so it’s the perfect test for Indy’s offense that puts just over 23 points per game on the scoreboard, though last week in their 31-3 win over the Texans they broke the thirty point mark for the first time this season.
Wentz has completed over 64 percent of his passes this year and he only has one interception in all six games, so now that his new favorite receiver TY Hilton is back on the field, the two can continue where they left off last week after connecting on 4/4 targets for 80 yards.
Can 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo Claim the Starting Spot for Good?
It was touch and go there for a while between the Niner’s two starting quarterback contenders, the veteran Jimmy Garoppolo and rookie Trey Lance, two potential starters whose injuries have slowed them both down this 2021 season.
It looks like Jimmy G’s injured calf has healed up enough to get him the start this Sunday night while Trey Lance’s hurt knee continues to heal, so this gives the veteran QB a chance to take the reins and prove he can be the franchise solution under center in Indianapolis if given the chance.
Garoppolo has started four games this season posting a 2-2 record along the way, his completion percentage (66.1) is respectable as are his five touchdown passes to just two interceptions, but for this San Fran team to start winning he needs to play even better.
Colts Key Player: (RB) Jonathan Taylor
The Colts’ eleventh ranked rushing attack is led by second-year running back Jonathan Taylor, a 5’ 10” 226-pound ball carrier whose 83-yard run is the longest in the NFL this season, an impressive stiff-armed Week 6 carry that led to a follow up a touchdown.
Taylor has been in the endzone four times this season, all in the last three games, and it’s no coincidence that the Colts seem to have come alive in that time, the success of this young running back a huge part of that newfound team confidence.
Last season, Taylor the rookie ran for almost 1,170 yards and 11 touchdowns, so he is a productive runner who is a critical part to this offense so keep an eye on him Sunday as he faces a 49ers defense that is ranked 18th against the run.
49ers Key Player: (WR) Deebo Samuel
Now in his third NFL season, 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel continues to impress as a playmaker, the 6’ 215-pound speedster is always a huge contributor although last season he only played in five games due to injury.
This year in five games, Samuel has already topped his production from 2020, so far with 31 catches on 52 targets for 548 yards and 3 touchdowns, his best two games in the 49er’s first two weeks which both ended up as a win.
With the team’s quarterback position has been a bit up in the air due to injury, it’s no wonder that Samuel’s production slipped in two of the last three weeks, but expect he and QB Jimmy G to hook up early and often against this Colts defense ranked 20th against the pass.
