My Pick: Boston Bruins (BOS)

Kicking off an incredibly busy night in the NHL is the Eastern Conference battle between the Boston Bruins (32-11-9) hosting the Tampa Bay Lightning (28-20-5). This rivalry game comes at a great time for both teams as they are looking for more consistency coming out of the NHL All-Star Break with a couple of tough performances.

This game tonight will be the third time that the Lightning and the Bruins are facing each other. The Lightning took the 5-4 overtime win at home on November 20 behind the game-winning goal from Tampa Bay forward Brandon Hagel. The Bruins got revenge on January 6 with a 7-3 win in Boston. Bruins center Trent Frederic scored two goals, while star forward David Pastrnak accounted for one goal and an assist.

The Bruins have been one of the most dominant teams in the entire NHL thanks to their aggressiveness on both sides of the ice. Boston ranks eighth in the league in goals per game (3.38), with Pastrnak leading the way. Defensively, the Bruins have been one of the most consistently dominant teams as they have allowed only an average of 2.58 goals per game.

Boston is coming from two tough losses in three of their last games as they have been outscored 7-1 in those losses. It looked like they lost their focus after the All-Star break, but they dominated the Vancouver Canucks 4-0 in between those games.

The Bruins need to retain that focus to take on the Lightning, who possess one of the most electrifying offenses in the league. Tampa Bay is ranked sixth in the league in goals per game (3.42) as they are a fast and pass-happy team. Their Achilles heel is their defense as they allow an average of 3.3 goals per game (24th in the league). Boston has the resources to recreate another 7-3 win on Tuesday night.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Washington Capitals

Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. Wager $5 and get the No-Sweat Bet at DraftKings!

My Pick: Colorado Avalanche (COL)

If there is a game that is completely unpredictable tonight, it will be the matchup between the Washington Capitals (23-20-8) hosting the Colorado Avalanche (32-17-4). The Avalanche and the Capitals are both on some serious losing streaks, which have come from a tough schedule of opponents and rough games.

The Capitals came into the season as a serious Eastern Conference playoff contender due to their veteran leadership and their defensive tenacity. Their defense was going to be the reason why they remained in the hunt for the postseason. Even at their lowest point, the Capitals are ranked 13th in the league in goals allowed per game (3.02).

Their offense, on the other hand, is only averaging 2.37 goals per game (30th in the league). It has been the reason why they have lost key games.

Washington’s offense and defense have been up-and-down with the team losing eight of the last nine games. They lose in low-scoring games and then they allow four to six goals while scoring well.

The Avalanche have come out of the NHL All-Star Break horribly by losing all four of their games, all on the road. Their offense, which ranks second in the league in goals per game (3.65), has only scored six goals during this four-game stretch. Their defense, which is stacked full of elite defenders and goalies, has allowed an average of four goals per game.

Colorado is more than likely to rebound from their tough stretch than the Capitals. The Avalanche previously defeated the Capitals on January 24 at home with a 6-2 score. The big three for Colorado had monster performances against the highly efficient defense of Washington. Center Nathan MacKinnon accounted for four goals and an assist. Forward Mikko Rantanen accounted for one goal and four assists. Finally, defender Cale Makar accounted for one goal and two assists.
