My Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning (TB)

Kicking off the night in the NHL is the Eastern Conference battle featuring two of the most explosive offenses in the NHL as the New Jersey Devils (21-15-2) go on the road to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning (20-17-5). This game is projected to be a high-scoring shootout as not only are these two teams explosive offenses, but the defenses are among the lackluster defenses in the league.

The Devils are coming into this game with the fifth-ranked scoring offense (3.55 goals per game) thanks to the high-volume play of forward Jesper Bratt and center Jack Hughes. Both Jesper and Hughes have accumulated 45 points as they are efficient passers to set up great scoring opportunities for their teammates.

The Lightning originally started the season with the most efficient scoring offense. Over the course of the season, the Lightning lost steam as they played more elite defenses. Tampa Bay is ranked 14th in the league in goals per game (3.24). One of the biggest reasons for Tampa Bay’s explosiveness is the play of forward Nikita Kucherov, who is one of the most productive players in the league. In 41 games played, Kucherov has accumulated 67 total points with 28 goals and 39 assists.

Defensively, both New Jersey and Tampa Bay struggle to contain opposing offenses. Tampa Bay is ranked 27th in the league in goals allowed per game (3.45) well New Jersey is right 28th in goals allowed per game (3.55).

In this matchup of an all-offensive battle, the home crowd is going to be a significant advantage.

New York Rangers vs. St. Louis Blues

  • Time: 8:00 PM E.T. - Thursday

  • Moneyline: Rangers (-166) | Blues (+140)

  • Puck Line: Rangers -1.5 (+145) | Blues +1.5 (-175)

  • Total: Over 6.5 (+100) | Under 6.5 (-120)

My Pick: Under 6.5 Goals

One of the most undervalued games of the night will feature an Eastern Conference vs. Western Conference matchup. The New York Rangers (26-11-2) go on the road to take on the St. Louis Blues (20-18-1), who have rejuvenated life into the team after replacing their coaching staff.

The Rangers are attempting to reestablish momentum as they have lost four of the last six games. Their offense and defense have fluctuated between efficiency and unproductive during this span. They are currently on a two-game losing streak as they have allowed 10 goals despite allowing only two combined goals in their previous two wins.

One month ago, the Blues had accounted for an overall record of 13-14-1 and fired Craig Berube, the coach who lead the team to their only Stanley Cup title. Since then, the Blues have won seven of the next 11 games as their defense has played more efficiently.

This game is highly likely going to be a low-scoring game as both offenses for the Rangers and the Blues are currently struggling. The Blues are ranked 26th in the league in goals per game (2.75) and have averaged 1.5 goals in the last six games.

The Rangers have been successful on the offensive side of the ice, but have struggled in the first four games of the new year. They have only scored 11 goals in those four games, only averaging 2.75 goals.

With both offenses struggling in the new year, there is a great possibility of a low score throughout the three periods.

Boston Bruins vs. Vegas Golden Knights

  • Time: 10:00 PM E.T. - Thursday

  • Moneyline: Bruins (-135) | Golden Knights (+114)

  • Puck Line: Bruins -1.5 (+180) | Golden Knights +1.5 (-218)

  • Total: Over 6 (-120) | Under 6 (+100)

My Pick: Boston Bruins (BOS)

The final game of the night in the NHL is said to be a potential Stanley Cup finals matchup as the Boston Bruins (24-8-8) go on the road to take on the Vegas Golden Knights (23-13-5). This is a game that will have significant input and breaking droughts with multiple losses. Both Vegas and Boston have recently encountered tough losses and look to use this game moving forward.

Boston came into the new year with an overall record of 22-7-6 but has lost three of the last five games. The Bruins are attempting to overcome 2 consecutive losses that ended both in significant heartbreak with a 4-3 shootout loss at the Colorado Avalanche and a 4-3 overtime loss at the Arizona Coyotes.

Vegas started the season with an 11-0-1 overall record, but has since suffered inconsistent play on both sides of the ice. Vegas has lost three of the first four games into the new year and has won only three of the last 11 games.

The Bruins are more than eager to overcome their tough overtime losses to get their second win of the new year. The Golden Knights have been struggling for a while with their lack of productivity on offense being the biggest indicator of their struggles.

The Golden Knights are coming off a 3-0 road loss at the Colorado Avalanche last night and could be physically and mentally fatigued. Having to play one elite team on the road and losing only to come back home and play another elite team is a lot to ask a struggling team.
