Dallas Stars vs. Detroit Red Wings

My Pick: Dallas Stars (DAL)

Kicking off the night in the NHL is a huge matchup between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference. The Dallas Stars (27-13-6) go on the road to take on the Detroit Red Wing (24-17-5) in a potentially high-scoring game. This game will be the second matchup this season between the Stars and the Red Wings.

The Stars’ offense took over the Red Wings in their previous matchup on December 11 as the Stars won 6-3. Stars defender Esa Lindell and forward Jason Robertson each accounted for a goal and an assist. Defender Miro Heiskanen accounted for two goals and an assist with one being an empty netter.

Dallas is still among the top offense teams in the league after starting slow. The Stars are ranked third in the NHL in goals per game (3.63) as Robertson, center Roope Hintz, and center Joe Pavelski playing at a high level. Dallas has scored three or more goals in 11 of their last 13 games. Their last win was a 6-2 win at the New Jersey Devils, but they are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss at the New York Islanders.

The Red Wings have been among the top offenses in the league since the start of the season. Detroit is averaging 3.48 goals per game (seventh in the league) thanks to a series of reliable scorers that include center Dylan Larkin, forward Alex DeBrincat, and forward Lucas Raymond. The biggest drawback to the Red Wings is their lack of efficiency on the defensive side of the ice. The Red Wings are ranked 22nd in the league in goals allowed per game (3.28).

Dallas is most consistent on both sides of the ice, but most of all, they are playing elite on offense. If the Stars’ offense keeps clicking, they are going to be too much for the Red Wings.

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Philadelphia Flyers

Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. Bet $5, snag $200 in bonus bets with DraftKings. Win or lose, you're a winner!

My Pick: Tampa Bay Lightning (TB)

Also kicking off the NHL tonight is an Eastern Conference battle as the Tampa Bay Lightning (24-18-5) go on the road to take on the Philadelphia Flyers (25-16-6). This game tonight will be the first time these two teams will meet on the ice.

Tonight will be a significant battle between the high-power offense of the Lightning take on the efficient defense of the Flyers. The Flyers rank eighth in the league in goals allowed per game (2.79) while the offense of the Lightning ranks 11th in the league in goals per game (3.52). The Flyers are a team that possesses great confidence in their defenders and goalies.

While Philadelphia is confident on defense, they don’t have the same amount of confidence on the offensive side of the ice. The Flyers are ranked 23rd in the league in goals per game (2.94). It is a big reason why they are not among the most elite teams in the Eastern Conference.

When it comes to the series against the Lightning, they have a hard time keeping pace. Tampa Bay has won five of the last seven matchups, all three matchups in 2019, and 10 of the last 14 matchups overall against Philadelphia.

Tampa Bay’s pacing on offense has been a big indicator of the team’s success within the past few matchups.
