My Pick: Winnipeg Jets (WPG)

This Wednesday night kicks off with an all-Canadian mashup featuring a Western Conference versus Eastern Conference game that can potentially be a Stanley Cup Finals preview. The best team in the West, the Winnipeg Jets (30-11-4), go on the road to take on the Toronto Maple Leafs (23-24-8), who are fighting a heavy Eastern Conference. This game will be the first meeting this season between these two teams, with a home-and-home two-game series coming up.

The Maple Leafs are attempting to get out of a funk as they have lost five of the last seven games, with their only wins being at Calgary and at Seattle. The Maple Leafs have allowed at least three goals in six of those games. If anything is keeping Toronto from a championship this season, it will be the play of their defense, as they allow an average of 3.27 goals per game.

On the other side of the spectrum, the Jets possessed the top-ranked defense in the league, allowing an average of 2.29 goals per game. This will help against a stacked Maple Leafs team that has two of the best offensive players in the league, forward William Nylander and center Auston Matthews.

Winnipeg has won 10 of the last 12 games without needing huge scores to win. If the game becomes a high-scoring affair, the Jets could find themselves outpaced. An example is last Monday's 4-1 road loss to the Boston Bruins.

The Jets have been quietly one of the most efficient teams this season, as they could make some noise in the NHL by winning both games against Toronto.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Boston Bruins

Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. Bet $5, snag $200 in bonus bets with DraftKings. Win or lose, you're a winner!

My Pick: Boston Bruins (BOS)

The biggest game of the night in the NHL is set as the Carolina Hurricanes go on the road to take on the Boston Bruins in an Eastern Conference brawl. This game will be the first time this season that the Bruins and the Hurricanes will meet on the ice. This game is also one of the closest matchups in sportsbooks such as DraftKings.

Despite the close odds in sports books, the Bruins are coming into this game with multiple edges. Carolina is 3-3 in their last six games, as their defense has allowed 13 points in the last three games. Boston is on a five-game win streak, as while their defense has been playing up and down, their offense has played at a high level.

The Bruins are much more efficient on both sides of the ice than the Hurricanes. Boston is ranked seventh in the league in goals per game (3.48) while their defense is tied for fourth in the league and goals allowed per game (2.61).

Carolina has attempted to replicate the same amount of impact as elite teams like the Bruins. The Hurricanes are ranked ninth in the league in goals per game (3.4) and 14th in the league in goals allowed per game (3.02).

Boston has played big in play games recently, as they are coming off a 5-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche and a 4-1 win last Monday over the Winnipeg Jets, the best team in the West. Look for the Bruins to be prepared for this big game as well.
