My +124 Pick for Arsenal vs. Newcastle United

Back Arsenal on the two-way spread with a -1.5 goals handicap. This is essentially a bet on the Gunners winning this game by a two-goal margin or more, which is well within their capability.

Arsenal Must Not Give Up With the Title Race Still Not Over

For most of this season, it looked like Arsenal would finally end their 22-year wait for a Premier League title. Runners-up in each of the last three campaigns, Arsenal were top of the table between early October and the middle of April. But it is all about how you finish in this sport, and the Gunners head into the weekend in second rather than first.

Had they beaten Manchester City last weekend, Arsenal would be on the verge of the championship. But a 2-1 defeat by their rivals for the crown saw City close the gap to three points. Pep Guardiola’s side then climbed above Arsenal courtesy of a victory over Burnley on Wednesday.

It would be bitterly disappointing for Arsenal to miss out on the title. But the north Londoners have dropped points in half of their last eight matches, losing to City and Bournemouth, and drawing with Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Whereas City are peaking in the spring, Arsenal seemed to hit their top form in the fall.

But nothing has been decided yet. The Gunners have the chance to retake top spot by beating Newcastle United this weekend, when City are in FA Cup action against Southampton. Perhaps Arsenal will rediscover their form now that the pressure is on City, who became the new favorites for the title with the best online sportsbooks after that 2-1 triumph on Sunday. Arteta, for one, still thinks his side can do it.

“I believe today, I believed on Wednesday, a week ago because I see them every day and I know the level that we have,” Arteta said at the Etihad Stadium. “But today if [the players] need to be more convinced, I think they are now more convinced. They were talking about it in the dressing room. It's a new league now.

“We are not going to stop and we are going to go again, that is for sure. I mean if I have to pick the players to win the Premier League with five games to go in our hands and be in the final of the Champions League, I think I should be at home.”

Newcastle United in Danger of Limping Over the Finish Line

This has been a season to forget for Newcastle United. The club ended a 70-year trophy drought last term by winning the EFL Cup, but there will be no new trophies in the St James’ Park cabinet this time around. Worse still, Newcastle are in very real danger of failing to qualify not only for the Champions League, but for any form of European soccer.

The Magpies sit 14th in the table going into the weekend. A six-point gap to the top eight means they are not out of the conversation for European qualification just yet, but it would take quite the turnaround for Eddie Howe’s men to overturn that deficit - not least because Newcastle are in such poor form.

“Confidence and our flow isn't really there, which is putting pressure on our backline,” Howe said after a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth last weekend, after which sections of the home crowd booed the team.

“There is minimal threat before their two goals. We make mistakes, and we do not recover from them. I think the lads were there, they were present, they were trying. I would never criticize the group for that. We are collectively not at our best level, but I don't doubt the character of the players.

“[It is] disappointing when you are not delivering for your supporters. That is the ultimate disappointment when you feel you are letting people down who come here and support us. If they are critical of us, we have to accept that as that's the game we are in.”

Arsenal Can Get Back on Track by Winning on Home Soil

Arsenal allowed their nerves to get the better of them in the 2-1 loss to Bournemouth in their last home game, but their general performance against Manchester City was good. This is a very different sort of match, though. Newcastle will not simply sit back and defend deep, but Arsenal will not be able to use the same press-and-counter approach they used at the Etihad Stadium.

Still, if Arsenal play to their potential they should get the job done. Things have not gone well for them since the EFL Cup final last month, but as Arteta said in the comments detailed above, his team are still in an excellent position in the Premier League and the Champions League.

A failure to win this game would leave Arsenal in a difficult position, but although Manchester City are now the title favorites, nothing has been decided yet. Guardiola’s team may yet slip up, so Arsenal must ensure they do everything they can to stick close to City. Indeed, the way the fixtures have worked out, Arsenal have the chance to remain ahead of them for a few weeks (albeit having played a game more).

Newcastle United are really struggling at the moment and they will probably come unstuck this weekend. Go for Arsenal to win with a -1.5 handicap.
