Chelsea Could Do With Statement Win Against Fellow Big Side

It was another chaotic summer at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea went on a major spending spree for the third year in a row. The strategy had brought questionable results in 2022 and 2023, yet the ownership group doubled down on their policy and sanctioned deals worth more than £200m in total.

Many felt it was too much. Indeed, it probably was. But Chelsea have been better on the pitch than most people anticipated. Heading into this weekend’s crunch clash with Arsenal, which precedes the November international break, Chelsea sit fourth in the Premier League standings with a tally of 18 points from 10 games. By way of comparison, the Blues were 11th at this stage last term.

Much of the credit must go to Enzo Maresca. The Italian, who previously served as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, guided Leicester City to promotion from the Championship in 2023/24. His appointment at Stamford Bridge was seen as a gamble given his relative lack of managerial experience.

Maresca has done a good job so far, though. Crucially he has not made five or six changes to his team every week. Instead, he has settled on a favoured 13 or 14 players and chosen his XI from there. Fringe members of the squad have had to use Conference League and EFL Cup matches to try and impress.

There are two areas where Chelsea need to improve, however. The first is defensively: they have conceded 12 goals, more than anyone else in the top five. The second is their record against other bigger clubs. Chelsea’s two defeats came at the hands of Manchester City and Liverpool, while they could only draw with Manchester United last time out. Sunday’s showdown with Arsenal is thus an opportunity for Maresca’s men to claim a major scalp.

Arsenal Must End Their Recent Slump Before It Is Too Late

Arsenal are going through a bad spell right now. We are still early in the campaign and nothing has ever been decided in November, but it already feels like Mikel Arteta’s team cannot really afford to lose this London derby if they want to stay in touch at the summit of the Premier League standings.

Arsenal have won only one of their last four games in all competitions, and that was an EFL Cup tie against Championship outfit Preston North End. A 2-2 draw with Liverpool was not a particularly negative result in isolation, although Arsenal failed to press home their advantage after dominating the first half of that encounter.

The Gunners lost their next Premier League outing, going down 1-0 to Newcastle United, before the same scoreline undid them against Inter in the Champions League last time out. Arsenal did not play especially poorly at San Siro, but they are in a slump right now and nothing seems to be going for them.

Arsenal cannot afford to feel sorry for themselves, though. By the time this match kicks off in west London, they could be 10 points adrift of top spot (Liverpool, the current EPL leaders, host Aston Villa in the late game on Saturday). That would be a sizable deficit even after 11 rounds of fixtures.

On the other hand, a win in a game like this could be enough to revitalize Arsenal’s campaign. Martin Odegaard is fit again and Arteta is hopeful that Declan Rice, Mikel Merino and Kai Havertz will all be available for selection against Chelsea. Arsenal could have arguably their first-choice starting XI out on the pitch at Stamford Bridge, so this is no time for excuses.

Standout Fixture of the EPL Weekend Will Be Worth Watching

Chelsea have one or two fitness issues of their own, not least that of Cole Palmer. The England international, who is undeniably his club team’s star player, will need to be assessed in the run-up to the game, but it is more likely than not that he starts. Jadon Sancho is more of a doubt, but he is much easier to replace than Palmer.

There was a time not too long ago when Chelsea dominated this fixture. For example, the Blues won five and drew three in a run of eight head-to-head clashes between April 2012 and April 2015. The tables have turned in the last few years, though: Arsenal have won seven of their last nine meetings with Chelsea, who have been victorious just once in that time.

In our view, the Blues will break that run this weekend. They are above Arsenal in the table right now and have had better results in the last few weeks. Confidence in the Gunners’ camp has taken a hit amid a run of three straight league games without a win.

Chelsea also have home advantage behind them. It is true that they played in Europe on Thursday whereas Arsenal were in action on Wednesday, but the former stayed in London while the latter played in Italy. Moreover, a home game against Armenian minnows Noah was not too taxing for Chelsea, who did not name a full-strength side anyway.

Maresca’s team are not the most solid defensively, but provided Palmer starts they can outgun Arsenal here.
