Canada takes on Morocco in the first Round of 16 matchup at the World Cup this Saturday. The Canucks edged a narrow win against South Africa in the Round of 32, while Morocco needed penalties to get past the Netherlands.
The latest World Cup odds have Morocco listed as the favorite to defeat Canada. The Atlas Lions reached the semifinals in 2022 and will be hoping to earn a spot in the quarterfinals for just the second time in their history with a win over Canada. Jesse Marsch’s side delivered Canada’s first-ever World Cup knockout victory thanks to a dramatic late goal from Stephen Eustáquio against South Africa.
These two nations also met at the last World Cup in Qatar. Morocco claimed a 2-1 victory in 2022 during the group stage.

Below, we share our expert predictions and best bets for the game between Canada and Morocco.
Morocco To Win (90 Minutes)
With Morocco listed as such a heavy favorite to qualify, there’s more value in backing the Atlas Lions to win in 90 minutes. Their quality and experience should shine through against Canada, especially given the Canucks' vulnerability defending large spaces in behind their back line. The Atlas Lions easily could have beaten the Netherlands without penalties, if it hadn’t been for a strong display by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, and Canada is a weaker side than the Dutch.
Achraf Hakimi 1+ Shots on Target
Paris Saint-Germain right back Achraf Hakimi is Morocco’s star player. He is constantly making runs forward and picking up advanced positions despite being a defender. The 27-year-old has managed at least one shot on goal in each of his last two games. That trend will likely continue against a Canada side that gives up plenty of opportunities. At even money, this bet represents solid value.
Brahim Diaz Anytime Assist
Brahim Diaz has an important role off the right-hand side in this Moroccan team. He often drifts inside to open up the space for the overlapping Hakimi, and his elite passing ability often splits opposing defenses. We saw that on his assist for Ismael Saibari’s goal against Brazil. With Canada expected to leave gaps open due to their high defensive line, Diaz will have plenty of opportunities to play those passes and get an assist.
Co-hosts Canada are looking to reach the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in their history this weekend, a milestone that would undoubtedly cause a massive shift in the Canada odds to win World Cup futures market. They secured their spot in the Round of 16 right at the death against Bafana Bafana following a fantastic finish by Eustáquio in the 92nd minute. Despite a positive first half, Marsch’s men struggled to create many chances in the second.
Captain Alphonso Davies finally made his first appearance at this year’s tournament, coming on in the 75th minute to replace Tajon Buchanan down the left flank. However, the Bayern Munich man was clearly not fully fit and struggled to make too much of an impact.
The Canucks opened their World Cup campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Bosnia. While Canada picked up their first-ever World Cup win in a dominant 6-0 victory over Qatar, they then failed to top Group B after losing 2-1 against Switzerland. Even with two wins finally under their belt, they are yet to beat top opposition. This will be Canada’s toughest test of the tournament.
Morocco kept things late against the Dutch to secure a spot in the last 16 here. An Issa Diop header in the 91st minute drew the scores level after Cody Gakpo had put the Netherlands in the lead. They then needed a penalty shootout to advance, with in-form forward Saibari netting the winning spot kick.
Before the knockouts, Mohamed Ouahbi’s men finished as runners-up in Group C, falling short behind Brazil only on goal difference. They shared the points in a 1-1 draw with the five-time winners during Matchday 1, before easing past Scotland and Haiti in their final two group outings.
The Atlas Lions are aiming to match their unexpected and historic run at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. They reached the semifinals that year, progressing past Spain and Portugal in the earlier knockout rounds before coming up short against France.
There’s no reason why Morocco cannot replicate the success they had in Qatar four years ago. A young core of Chadi Riad, Ayyoub Bouaddi, and Bilal El Kannouss has injected a freshness into the squad. Coupled with the experience of Hakimi, Noussair Mazraoui, Brahim Diaz, and Azzedine Ounahi, they’re a well-balanced side.
Hakimi is the no. 1 threat for Morocco down the right flank. His piercing runs cause all sorts of problems for opposition defenses, whether that be in the form overlaps or making runs into the central areas in behind. Toronto FC’s Richie Laryea will have a tough task on his hands to limit Hakimi’s impact.
Marsch will expect his team to continue with the same intensity that has got them to this stage. They’re a high-pressing side that looks to steal the ball off the opposition high up the pitch in their 4-4-2 system. Once they are in possession, Canada looks to attack quickly with fast and direct play. Both of these factors can hinder them, however, leaving space in behind for the likes of Hakimi and Saibari to exploit.
Canada does have the offensive ability to score goals against Morocco, who have been far from perfect defensively so far this summer. If the likes of Jonathan David and Davies can find their best form, the Canucks can cause problems.
Ouahbi has turned this Morocco team into a much more complete offensive side that will be happy to attack from the off. It’s hard to see how they will not be able to capitalize on the expected high defensive line from Canada, especially given the technical quality of the likes of Diaz to play dangerous, line-breaking balls. The Atlas Lions won’t be afraid to be aggressive in their offensive approach, looking to get plenty of men into the box to make the most of crosses down both flanks.
