It’s Mexico vs. England in what is shaping up to be a monumental World Cup Round of 16 clash at Mexico City Stadium. Backed by a raucous home crowd and with the altitude in their favor, the host nation will be confident it can get past Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions.
Despite El Tri having the home advantage, England is the oddsmakers’ favorite to advance to the quarterfinals, a consensus shared by most expert World Cup predictions. Mexico hasn’t reached the last eight since 1986, when it last hosted the tournament, while England has made the quarterfinals in back-to-back World Cups.

Below are our expert betting predictions and best bets for Mexico vs. England. Each bet has been carefully selected following in-depth research and analysis.
England To Qualify
It’s rare to see England’s odds to qualify this long given the superior talent in its squad. Naturally, the altitude and home-field advantage must be considered, but the quality England has on the bench to freshen things up late in the match offsets those factors. Mexico will set out to play more aggressively than any team the Three Lions have faced at the tournament so far, which could easily play into England’s hands. Tuchel’s side will be tactically prepared for this battle, and its elite stars will be expected to see it through.
Harry Kane Anytime Goalscorer Including Extra Time
Harry Kane has become England’s all-time leading World Cup scorer at this year’s tournament and he continues to lead the Three Lions to victory. His brace against Congo helped them come from behind to reach the Round of 16, and the Bayern Munich striker remains England’s biggest threat. With extra time a genuine possibility in this match, it’s important to select the right market for this bet.
Unbeaten with a perfect record and yet to concede a goal, Mexico is making its fans dream of going all the way, a dominant run that has forced a noticeable shift in the Mexico odds to win World Cup futures market. It’s been 40 years since the Mexican national team last reached the quarterfinals, but it can take confidence from the fact the last time it did so was also on home soil. El Tri defeated Bulgaria 2-0 at the last 16 back in 1986 before agonizingly losing to West Germany on penalties in the quarterfinals.
This year, Javier Aguirre’s side topped a relatively straightforward Group A featuring South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia. It then secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the Round of 32, thanks to first-half goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez. It was also Mexico’s first World Cup knockout victory since the 1986 tournament.
Quiñones has been the standout player for El Tri, scoring three goals and adding an assist in four World Cup appearances. That includes a rocket to open the scoring against Ecuador last time out. Teenage sensation Gilberto Mora earned his second consecutive start against Ecuador and impressed in midfield, creating several chances and being progressive in the final third. He’s in line to start again in this one.
England did just enough to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in the Round of 32 to set up this colossal clash. Kane netted a second-half brace to spare England’s blushes and send them to the last 16. That came after Brian Cipenga stunned the Three Lions inside the first ten minutes to put the Leopards ahead in Atlanta. Tuchel’s men piled on the pressure in the first half, but a brave goalkeeping display by Lionel Mpasi-Nzau kept England at bay heading into the half-time break.
Despite the England faithful being concerned about their performances thus far, the team is yet to taste defeat at this year’s competition. A 4-2 win in its Group L opener against Croatia has been the standout performance, but England has had to drag their way through since then. The injury crisis at right back has been a problem, and Reece James remains a doubt for this one. Declan Rice may start there instead after his solid spell in the closing moments of the Congo match.
The last time Mexico and England went head-to-head at the World Cup was in 1966, when Alf Ramsey’s England recorded a 2-0 group-stage win. That year, England went on to lift the Jules Rimet Trophy. It’s a completely different set of circumstances this time around, of course, especially with Mexico enjoying home-field advantage; England will have to cope with the altitude and intense pressure from the ferocious, buoyant crowd. Nevertheless, a difficult match against Congo may have been the perfect preparation for this fixture.
Playing in a 4-3-3 system, Aguirre instructs his defenders to spread wide, with holding midfielder Erik Lira dropping deep to provide an option in central midfield. Unexpectedly, Congo built play from a wide back four against the Three Lions, which caused their 4-4-2 press all sorts of issues. Now that Tuchel has had to experience this, he will be much better prepared to face a Mexico side that builds from the back in a similar way.
The key for England is whether it takes a more aggressive pressing approach to mitigate those issues and plug the gaps, or whether Tuchel decides for his team to sit deeper and close passing lanes. He could opt for the latter to combat the altitude problems.
England will also need to stop crosses into the box, which is a clear strength of El Tri. Roberto Alvarado has been a creative threat throughout the tournament, not only on the right flank, but also when drifting inside.
The superior talent in the England squad makes the team the favorite to advance to the quarterfinals. Kane and Jude Bellingham, in particular, almost always deliver when England needs them most. The center-back pairing of César Montes and Johan Vásquez will need to be at their best to stop them. While Mexico is yet to concede a goal and will be extremely difficult to break down, the side has yet to face the level of quality that England possesses.
