After loosing to Lyon 2-1, Liverpool puts themselves in a desperate state of win or go home.

After just 25 minutes Steven Gerrard limped off the field again with groin problems. The mere fact that Liverpool coach Rafeal Benitez played the “injured” midfielder is plaguing Reds fans across the world. Despite the controversy, Benitez remains adamant that starting Gerrard was no mistake. The optimistic coach still believes his squad can rally and get through Group E with 3 matches left to play. Liverpool has thus far only claimed 3 points from 3 games and is in dire straits needing to win their remaining games. Lyon is atop the group with 9 points while Fiorentina sits in the second place.

The Reds, without injured Fernando Torres, struck first against Lyon through Yossi Benayoun. In another controversial decision, Benitez took out Benayoun to wailing boos from the crowd.

I completely agree with the former decision to start Gerrard. The Reds have no chance on the international stage without their superstars. Has it not been obvious? Without Torres, they have terrible trouble finding the back of the net. Gerrard controls the play and tempo in the midfield and adds a second and valuable threat of scoring. You have to try to play your talent to have a chance. I am willing to bet that coach and player, and not to mention the doctors had some kind of conversation about his health before sending him onto the pitch. As for replacing Benayoun, I completely disagree with this decision. When someone is playing well, and giving you opportunities to score, for the love of God, do not take him out. Benayoun had several chances during the game, and maybe this is just me, but can you score if you don’t create chances?

As for the Premiership… what luck, Liverpool takes on powerhouse Manchester United on Sunday.

Statistic of the day

Liverpool has not lost 4 in a row since 1987. Doesn’t seem that long ago, but that is 22 years ago folks.
