Transfer Rumors: Dzeko, Rooney, Kaka, and Robinho

Published by William | Filed under Football (aka soccer)

With the January transfer window about to be shut here soon until the warm months of Summer, I felt it is only necessary we discuss the latest transfer gossip around Europe. But instead of talking about realistic transfers that could actually go down before the end of next week, SURPRISE! We’re going to chat about the high profile moves that are rumored to potentially go down this summer! YAY!!

It’s hard to imagine we could top last summer’s soap opera transfer saga. First Kaka breaks a world record transfer fee in making the switch from AC Milan to Real Madrid, only to be trumped shortly thereafter by the one and only Cristiano Ronaldo in his move from United to the same club. Then there was the Franck Ribery saga, followed by David Villa to England rumors, blah, blah, blah. Well guess what folks?? It’s not going to be any different this summer so buckle your seat belts! Here’s the latest on the high profile names that could be sporting new kits come next fall.

Edin Dzeko (Wolfsburg): Dzeko, Germany’s leading goal scorer in all competitions (15), is probably the only one out of the 4 players mentioned in this post that has a chance of being moved during THIS transfer window. He has recently been linked with potential moves to English clubs Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea as well as Serie A’s AC Milan but after Dzeko’s agent slapped a €40 million price tag on his prized asset, it makes the move a little less likely. I don’t really understand why Chelsea was in the mix as they have quite an attacking force in Drogba, Anelka, and Lampard. United could maybe use him since Berbatov isn’t exactly carrying his share of the load with Rooney but en lieu of their recent debt reports, they probably should save the cash. Arsenal and Milan, however, makes ALOT of sense. Both teams are surprise title contenders that could certainly benefit from the additional firepower. The Gunners took quite a blow when Van Persie went down for the season so a move here would probably be just what the Wenger ordered. AC Milan, on the other hand, has shocked us all by climbing back to the top of the Serie A standings and would be a great target for Ronaldinho, Beckham, and others to get the ball to. However, they also lack the funding so they’ll probably have to wait till the summer for this hot commodity. Dzeko has publicly voiced his interest in a move to the Rossoneri so watch out Summer 10′.

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United): While Dzeko may be the most likely to be moved during this window or next, Rooney may be the LEAST likely of these 4 to move. EVER. The Wonderboy has pledged his allegiance to Manchester United several times and says that he would love nothing more than to spend his entire career there. However despite his apparent loyalty, agents have said they have “heard” offers (generous offers) in the past few weeks from high profile clubs such as Barcelona in hopes of United making Rooney the club’s top earner (Rio Ferdinand is now the club’s highest paid). Also making this a bit more interesting is United’s recently arisen debt issues. Will this interfere with the club’s ability to meet their franchise player’s requests? I mean, he’s clearly earned the right to be the highest paid player on the team. The other question is if it is even a possibility that Wayne would leave over a contract dispute? We are obviously in the preliminary stages of this potential dilemma but things could get interesting down the road. Still, don’t expect Wayne to be in anything but the Red and Black anytime soon.

Kaka (Real Madrid): Brazilian phenom Kaka has recently been linked with a move back to his former club AC Milan after a poor performance in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao. Reports from Italian and Spanish media outlets alike say that manager Manuel Pellegrini is “alarmed and doesn’t know what to do with him”. I do think it is fair to say that Kaka hasn’t quite performed this season like he has in years past. He’s not in the top 20 for goal scorers in the Primera Division and nor is he even in the top 3 on his team. But I don’t know, maybe he’s having trouble adapting to the more technical Spanish game? Maybe he’s assumed a different role with players like Higuain and Benzema netting left and right and doesn’t feel the need to score as opposed to distribute. Nonetheless, this can all be examined at year’s end when we see what kind of hardware Real brings home. If they win some titles, surely this nonsense will dissipate. But if they fail to win, the blame is going to go somewhere and I wouldn’t be surprised if it starts with Kaka.

Robinho (Manchester City): Robinho has long been linked with moves from Manchester City. Despite being the most expensive player in the history of English football, the star Brazilian striker has been plagued with injury problems as well as constantly being criticized for his effort and attitude. The Robinho drama hit an all time low last week in City’s 2-0 loss to Everton at Goodison Park when he was brought on as a substitute for Roque Santa Cruz in the 9′ minute only to be brought off for Shaun Wright-Phillips in the 61st for his lackluster effort. Noooot good. Soon there after, speculation arose over clubhouse disputes with Roberto Mancini over the move only to be quickly shot down by Robinho in the media. The fact of the matter is this. Robinho must step it up if he wishes to reclaim his regular spot in the starting XI with the Citizens. If he doesn’t, then it is quite possible that his spot in next Summer’s World Cup with Dunga’s squad is at risk.
