AS Roma 2-1 Inter Milan: Serie A Championship Race Wide Open
Published by adam | Filed under Football (aka soccer), Serie A
AS Roma opens the title race through a thrilling 2-1 victory over Internazionale in Rome’s Stadio Olimpico through De Rossi and Luca Toni strikes.
The match saw a lot of action through pace, scoring threats, and physicality. Referee Emidio Morganti handed out 10 yellow cards, 7 of those received by Inter players.
Daniele De Rossi of AS Roma tapped in an early goal (17’) from a very sloppy mistake from goalkeeper Julio César, who is alleged to be one of the, if not the world’s best. Inter rallied, attacking time and time again, possessing 62 % of the game.
Internazionale did however respond through Diego Milito’s close range attempt (66’) to level the score in a bit of controversy as it appeared that Goran Pandev was in an offside position.
Minutes later, Luca Toni netted the winner in the 72’ sending the already roaring Stadio Olimpico into an eruption. 61,898 fans were on attendance to witness the chance of Roma climb back into the race for the Championship. Inter attempting a comeback but was again denied by the post as Milito had looked to beat the keeper. Inter struck the post/bar three times throughout the match just unable to find the finishing touch.
Inter manager Jose Mourinho was of course not happy about the loss as he hurriedly left the field refusing to speak with the press. On the other hand, Roma manager Ranieri, former Juventus boss, left the field full of smiles to a standing ovation.
Inter, still a point clear of Roma, is at the top of the tables in the race for the Scudetto. Roma and AC Milan (supposing they beat Lazio on Sunday) are close on the heels of Nerazzurri. The title however, is still Inter’s to lose.
