Tottenham through to Champions League
Published by adam | Filed under Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Europa League

In what was dubbed the £50 million match, Tottenham beat Manchester City 1-0 at Eastlands to all but secure their ticket to next year’s Champions League. The Spurs will only need to beat relegated Burnley on the final day of play.
Stunning and silencing the 47,370 on hand at the City of Manchester Stadium, Peter Crouch’s 82’ header was enough to lead the Spurs to victory. Heurelho Gomes played a remarkable game in goal stopping City’s attempts time and time again.
Tottenham had not made it to the big stage since 1962 where they lost to Benfica in the semi-finals.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp admitted he took a gamble with an overly attack- minded team. His gamble paid off and his boys are one game away from Champions League football. After the match, Redknapp also stated he initially predicted a top 7 finish, with the likes of Manchester City squeezing into the Big Four. Tottenham will still have to play the Champions League qualifier suppose the finish 4th.
Remember when Redknapp took over in 2008? The Spurs were bottom of the Premier League with 2 points from eight games. Nonetheless, thumbs up to the Spurs who have beaten Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Man City (2x) this season. Say Spurs beat Burnley and Arsenal lose to Fulham, Spurs will leap frog Arsenal into 3rd place. What an ending that would be. Fulham however, will be thinking about the Europa League Final against Atletico Madrid.
Meanwhile, Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini’s job may be at stake. The coach, however, has stated his intention to stay. Tevez, who is also in question, especially after his issues with Mancini’s training method, is expected to remain at City. Craig Bellamy on the other hand, may be on his way out of City.
City, now the richest team in the world, will have a shot at the Europa League. Chairman Khaldoon al-Mubarak and owner Sheikh Mansour will now realize that money can buy players but can not buy a team.
