Top Football Transfers – Summer 2010
Published by adam | Filed under Football (aka soccer), Premier League, Transfer Rumors

Albeit several coaching scares and a few costly transfers, we have had a fairly reasonable summer in terms of big name transfers in the world of football. The World Cup allowed players of lesser known clubs to showcase their talents. Many of these stars have since been transferred to some of the top clubs in the world. In the Premier League, Manchester City of course has heavily altered their roster. Manchester United’s pre-world cup gamble on Javier Hernandez on the other hand, is looking more and more to be well spent. The MLS will be happy in securing more big names in their effort to increase the level of talent in the United States.
Arsenal
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger continued his tradition of signing French youngsters in Marouane Chamakh (Bordeaux, £10.4m) and Laurent Koscielny (Lorient, £8.5m).
Out: Swiss defender Philippe Senderos (free, Fulham), Eduardo da Silva (£6m, Shakhtar Donetsk), Francis Coquelin (loan, Lorient), Pedro Botelho (loan, FC Cartagena), William Gallas (released), Mikael Silvestre (released), Sol Cambell (picked up by Newcastle)
Chelsea
Chelsea has done well not to change their winning formula through a relatively quiet summer, acquiring Israeli midfielder, Yosi Benayoun (Liverpool, £5m), Serbian Matej Delac (Inter Zapresic, £2.7m), and Brazilian young star Ramires (Benfica, undisclosed). Neymar is under negotiations and will likely join the Blues to add youth for the future.
Out: Michael Ballack (Bayer Leverkusen, free), Joe Cole (Liverpool, free), Deco (Fluminense FC), and Ricardo Cavalho (Real Madrid).

Liverpool
Liverpool fans can be proud of the way things have gone for the Reds. New Coach Roy Hodgson has somehow managed to keep a previously unhappy Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard at Anfield. Liverpool acquired midfielder Joe Cole (Chelsea, free), Scottish defender Danny Wilson (Rangers, £2m), and Milan Jovanovic (Standard Liege). Christian Poulsen (Juventus, €4.5m) was recently added in the case that someone offers the right price for Javier Mascherano.
Out: Yosi Benayoun to Chelsea (£5m), Albert Riera to Olympiakos (£3.7m)
Manchester City
Manchester City perhaps faces the biggest problem of all the Premier League clubs in deciding who to drop from their roster. City was one of the most active EPL clubs this summer, signing Ivorian Yaya Toure (Barcelona, £28m), Serbian Aleksandar Kolarov (Lazio, £19m), and Spanish midfielder, David Silva (Valencia, £29m). Henshall (undisclosed, Swindon Town), Jerome Boateng (Hamburg SV), and Mario Balotelli (Inter Milan) have also been added. Lets see if Mario can leave his undesired history with Inter. James Milner (Aston Villa) was just involved in a swap for Stephen Ireland plus around £18m in what is certainly a good deal for Aston Villa.
Out: Paul Marshall (free, Walsall), Martin Petrov (free, Bolton), David Ball (loan, Swindon Town), Gunnar Nielsen (loan, Tranmere Rovers), Javier Garrido (£2.5m, Lazio), Craig Bellamy (loan, Cardiff City), Stephen Ireland (Aston Villa). City released Bellamy to his hometown Championship League club Cardiff City with apparently no beef attached, striking.

Manchester United
United has already benefited from adding Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez (Chivas Guadalajara, £6m) as the Mexican youngster has already netted 4 goals (shin, face… hell, all body parts count these days). The EPL club also acquired Chris Smalling (Fullham, £10m).
West Ham United
West Ham was able to add promising young talent including Mexican Pablo Barrera (UNAM, £4m) and New Zealander Winston Reid (Midtjylland, £3m).

Notable International Transfers
Barcelona
In the biggest signing of the summer, Barcelona struck a deal for David Villa (Valencia, €40m). The club also acquired midfielder, Adriano Correira (Sevilla, € 9.5m)
Out: Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez to New York Red Bulls. MLS continues to sign over the hill players. Better than nothing right?
Real Madrid
Sami Khedira (Stuttgart, €14m), Maradona favorite, Angel Di Maria, (Benfica, €25m), defender, Paulo Carvalho (Chelsea, €10m), Mesut Ozil (Werder Bremen, €15 m)
Atletico Madrid
Uruguayan Diego Godin, (Villareal, 8m) and Brazilian defender, Filipe. (Dep. La Coruna, €12.5m)
Juventus
The Italian side has been a bit busier than the other major Italian clubs having bought Uruguayan striker, Jorge Martinez (Cataina, €12m), defender Leonardo Bonucci (Bari, €15.5m), and attacker Simone Pepe (Udinese, loan).
