4/16 22:00 GMT Real Madrid at Barcelona – Odds | Stats
We all know the story. The first of the run of El Clásicos is under way as Barcelona travel to Santiago Bernabéu to face Real Madrid. Los Galácticos were humiliated 5-0 the last time around and no doubt want to enact a little revenge on their Catalan foes. Real Madrid and Barcelona’s respective Champions League wins over Tottenham and Shakhtar Donetsk paved the way for the biggest string of games in the history of the Spanish rivalry.
Concerning head to head wins, the clubs are neck and neck, with Real slightly edging out the Catalans. Titles on the other hand are in Real’s favor as they boast nine European Cups to Barcelona’s three and 31 league titles to Barcelona’s 20. It has been all Barcelona as of late and this is their chance to tighten the gap. A league championship, a Spanish Cup, and a European trophy are up for grabs. El Clásico: The match that stops a nation. Let the 18 day marathon begin.
Real Madrid:
Christiano Ronaldo has claimed that Barça is human after all and that the club needs to be brought back down to earth. A win for Real would put Los Blancos back into contention within 5 points of league leaders Barcelona. Then, Real would have to win six and hope that Barça would uncharacteristically self-destruct. Nonetheless, Real Madrid is very good on home soil, winning 14 and losing only 1 this season. That loss however, was Jose Mourinho’s first home loss in 150 matches while his 5-0 defeat to Barça was his worst ever. Mourinho has no injury concerns now that Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Kaká, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain have all recovered fitness. It will take some time for Kaká to return to his days of dominance, and it seems that the manager is slowly rotating the play maker back into the lineup. Thankfully for los Merengues, Christiano has scored in his previous three matches and is in top form. Emmanuel Adebayor seems to have been liberated since his move from Manchester City.
Barcelona:
Barcelona would basically put a seal on their 3rd consecutive league championship with a win against Real. Since Pep Guardiola took over as manager in 2008, Barcelona have won all 5 Clasicos with 16 goals scored and just two conceded. In 15 away matches this season in La Liga, Barça has won 13 and drawn 2, losing none. The Blaugrana is dealing with a list of defensive issues as veteran defenders Eric Abidal (liver tumor) and Carles Puyol (knee) are out through injury while Javier Mascherano suspended. Defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets is likely to fall back and anchor Barcelona’s depleted backline. On a brighter note, Lionel Messi has continued to dominate with a league-high 29 goals to lead Christiano by one.

Prediction:
Both teams are coming off of dominating Champions League victories that should have instilled some confidence into either side. Barça dismantled Real last time around and will be quite aware that Mourinho and co are out for revenge. Real however, have not beaten Barcelona since May 2008. This series will come down to both mental preparation and tactical changes by the managers. To add a little flare, Messi has not scored in eight games against Mourinho-coached clubs, while Ronaldo has yet to score against Barcelona.
Pick:
Real Madrid 1 – 1 Barcelona
Next match: 4/20 Copa del Rey final at Valencia’s Mestalla Stadium.
Barcelona and Real have not met in the Spanish Cup final in 21 years when Barcelona won 2-0 in 1990. The clubs meet again April 27 and May 3 in the Champions League semifinals.

This five star match will also be a strategic battle between the top football managers of the moment, Mourinho and Guardiola. Barcelona will have to play without some first-team players in defense and Real could take advantage of this opportunity to score. I expect more than 3 goals here and a much needed home win.

I would certainty like to see more goals, but there are multiple factors at stake here. Barca realize they do not have to win this match to win the league while it is a must win (and still a long shot) for Real. Mourinho’s focus at this point is on the Champions League, so the question remains whether he throw everything in at once. On the other hand, the beauty of managing teams like Barcelona and Real is that you can’t go wrong with your substitutes. They are all world class. The outcome of this match will certainly have influence on the other three so, tactics should play a bigger part in this series than ever. Luckily, we have two masterminds behind the teams. Should be fun…

I think that both teams will attack, barcelona automatically go forward, while real madrid have to attack because they have to win. this may be a high goal scoring game, i hope so. the great thing is though, even if it is not, barcelona are just fun to watch.

i think this match has nothing to do with the league for the players. i believe real wants to win for the sole reason of revenge, and to humiliate barca for what happened a couple of months ago. I think that barcas 2 defenders being out will compensate for the fact that kaka and higuain were out in the last match.

Both teams have been pretty impressive this season, but while Barca remain the team to beat, Real Madrid haven’t convinced me they can end Barca’s domestic domination and it is for that reason I will back the hosts here. There is no doubt this will be a very tight game but I believe Barcelona will sneak a victory and return to the top of La Liga.
