Saturday evening in Houston Texas will see Copa America Group B participants Mexico take on Jamaica in their first match in the tournament. These CONCACAF members are no strangers to each other as they have met 11 times since 2013. Head-to-head Mexico has defeated Jamaica 22 times in 32 all-time meetings, with Jamaica failing to get the best of Mexico since June 2017 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Mexico as a CONCACAF member had to qualify for the Copa America via the Nations League route. El Tri narrowly avoided disaster in the quarterfinals having to go to penalties against Honduras in the second leg to advance. After sweeping through Panama in the semis, Mexico fell apart against their arch-rivals, U.S.A. in the Nations League Final but still managed to qualify.
Meanwhile Jamaica as a CONCACAF member needed the same destiny as Mexico to qualify as an invitee to the 2024 Copa America. The Quarterfinal saw them drawn up with Canada in a winner-takes-all with a trip booked to Copa America. After a first-leg setback, Jamaica produced a stunning comeback on Canadian soil to punch their ticket to this year’s edition of the tournament. They ultimately lost in the semis to the United States with no ramifications.

Jamie Lozano’s men might not be the most talented El Tri side we have seen in years past but make no mistake there is promising talent on this roster. Cruz Azul forward Uriel Antuna complied a successful 2023-24 campaign in both Liga MX seasons. He finished off with 20 goal contributions including most recently adding nine goals to his in the Clausura campaign which was the most by a Cruz Azul player.
El Tri star of tomorrow Santiago Gimenez has been hailed as the next superstar of his home nation. Gimenez had a brilliant year with his club team Feyenoord netting 23 goals in 30 Eredivisie contests. Currently, Gimenez hasn’t been as lethal on the scoresheet for his country as he is with his club, as the 23-year-old has only snagged four goals in 27 international caps.
We get into more detail in our Mexico at Copa America 2024 Prediction.
Leon Bailey who will be dearly missed on this Jamaica side stated his issues with the Jamaican federation. Even with his displeasure though he was still named to the 26-man squad. It will be difficult to fill in for his absence as he had 19 goal contributions in the 2023/24 EPL campaign with Aston Villa. His 10 goals were second to English International Ollie Watkins's 19 markers with Villa.
The current active highest-scoring international player for The Reggae Boyz is Shamar Nicholson. The 27-year-old has sniped 19 goals in 49 appearances for Jamaica. During his club campaign, he registered four goals with Clermont Foot of Ligue 1. In his most recent outing with Jamaica, he helped lead them to a 3-2 victory over Dominica in the 2026 World Cup Qualifying. In 90 minutes of play, he dazzled on the pitch and logged five shots with two of them finding the back of the net.
Despite their current form of late, Mexico should be capable of collecting a maximum result against this Jamaica squad. The Reggae Boyz won’t be pushovers in this affair but they just don’t have that extra quality that Mexico boasts, which could see Jamaica fall just short in this tilt. Mexico has a massive following in the United States, technically it’s a neutral site match but the El Tri faithful will be out in full force making this clash feel like a home game. Expect a tight match with Mexico escaping a hard-fought battle after 90 minutes with the verdict going their way.
