Red Sox at Mets Predictions and Picks

The Mets should win 90 percent of the games Jacob DeGrom starts. They don’t, but they should. It’s almost impossible to score off him at all even if this is the best offense he’s faed to date. Boston’s best chance is to battle out at bats and try to get DeGrom out in six innings or less. Then, go after the bullpen, but that’s not going to happen.

Picks:

-1.5 (+103)

Under 7 (-114)

Garcia’s 2021 record: (13-7-1)

Best In the Game Goes to Work for the Mets

This is an era of baseball where there are a ton of dominant pitchers. More than a handful of sure-fire first ball hall of farmers are in the league right now and that’s a fun time.

Of all of those dominant names, nobody is as overwhelming as Jacob DeGrom is right now. The Mets’ right-handed fireballer has come out with a vengeance in 2021, in fact, it would be almost impossible to be better than he’s been through his first four starts of the season.

DeGrom leads the majors with a microscopic 0.31 ERA — giving up just one earned run in 29 innings pitched. His last outing very well might have been the best of her career; the two-time Cy Young Award winner threw a complete game shutout, striking out a career-high 15 batters.

He’s gone six or more shutout innings in three of his four starts and the only loss he picked up of the season came when he gave up one run in eight innings and struck out 14 batters. It does not matter what offense he’s going up against or even iif he doesn’t have his “best” stuff — DeGrom has thrown more pitches 99mph and above than the rest of the starters in the MLB combined. He’s so dominant, it’s hard for the Mets to lose when he’s pitching (although they’ve done it frequently throughout the years).

Editor’s Picks

Red Sox a Pleasant Surprise Early On

The Red Sox are likely on the short list of the most pleasant surprises through the first month of the season. It’s the Giants, the Royals, and the Red Sox. After a 2020 season that Boston couldn’t forget quickly enough, they’ve suddenly come alive and it’s in large part thanks to one of the game’s most explosive offenses.

Boston leads the American League in runs scored and is second in all of baseball behind only the Cincinnati Reds. That’s thanks to JD Martinez who leads the team in every major offensive category and is top four in all of baseball in batting average (.379), home runs (7), RBI (21) and OPS (1.199). Xander Bogaerts is also hitting a red hot .366, Alex Verdugo is batting .325 and Rafael Devers is hitting for power Piwith six home runs and 18 RBI.

All in all, while most people were looking at the Yankees as World Series favorite, some were looking at the defending AL champion Rays to make another postseason run and still, others picked the Blue Jays as the sleeper team of the American League, it’s the Red Sox who sit atop the AL East.

On the Other Side of the Ball

On the other side of the ball, the Mets have struggled to score runs and the Red Sox have struggled to stop people from scoring. The Mets have scored the fewest runs in all of baseball and the Red Sox are in the top half of teams in runs surrendered.

Nick Pivetta is on the bump for Boston and they’re 3-1 in his starts while he is 2-0 overall with a 3.48 ERA. His last time out Pivetta had his first quality start of the year, throwing six innings and giving up just two runs.

The Mets offense has been rather cold in its own right, averaging just 2.8 runs over their past 10 games. Look out for Brandon Nimmo to have some success against Pivetta — he’s hitting .370 this year with an absurd .477 OBP.
