While Seattle sold off some key pieces at the trade deadline, this team has been playing their best baseball. They lost a couple of average bats and a great closer, but they have enough to compensate for that. We like Logan Gilbert to have another great start and for the Mariners' offense to stay hot today.
The Red Sox continue to surpass offseason expectations and sit just a couple of games back from an AL wildcard slot. While they have continued to impress since the All-Star break, this Red Sox team has struggled on the road. The lost series to the Giants and A’s on the road in the last two weeks showed their struggles away from Fenway in 2023. Their team's batting average drops by almost 60 points when on the road, and that will be a problem against Gilbert tonight.
While only a handful of Red Sox have faced Gilbert before, they have all struggled. That includes Rafael Devers, who is 0-5 against the young righty. Speaking of the Red Sox third-baseman, Devers has had a fantastic July at the plate. However, like the Red Sox, he has struggled on the road. The 26-year-old has a .246 batting average outside of Boston in 2023. While he had a nice opening game for this series, the numbers suggest a quiet day is coming for the slugger, which will lead to another road loss for the Sox.
We might avoid the run line if Boston had their ace on the mound tonight, but they instead will have Kutter Crawford (5-5, 3.86 ERA) getting the start. The reliever-turned-starter had a decent July, but he has been unable to go deep into games. Crawford has just one quality start since April 17, so don’t expect him to stick around this game for long. That will put pressure on this Boston bullpen, leading to another big night for Seattle’s lineup.
The Mariners have been one of the most disappointing teams of 2023, but things have started to turn around. They have raised their record over the .500 mark thanks to winning series against the Twins, Blue Jays, and Diamondbacks after the All-Star break. While we have seen them get hot before, it appears this offense has finally clicked. They are averaging 4.5 runs per game since the break, a vast improvement from the first half of the season. While the team decided to be sellers at the trade deadline, they still have enough to support Gilbert tonight.
Gilbert (9-5, 3.83 ERA) is turning into an essential piece of this Seattle rotation. While his ERA is up from 2022, his WHIP is currently the lowest of his short career. The 26-year-old had a rough June but turned things around in July by posting a 2.78 ERA. That includes quality starts against the Diamondbacks, Astros, and Giants. While Boston has a lot of talent, they have stumbled on the road. Gilbert will take advantage of that tonight, leading to a multi-run win for Seattle.
While the Mariners did trade a couple of hitters, their core is still intact. A budding superstar now leads them, Julio Rodriguez. The 22-year-old has taken a step back in his second season in the league, but he turned things around in July. J-rod posted a .292 batting average last month, and his batting average is 25 points higher when at home. He will lead the Seattle offense to another impressive run total en route to the win tonight.
