Chicago Fire have lost just once this season, but the draws have come at pretty big costs to them. They have managed to get just two wins in their 6 matches, which has seen them slip to 13th in the league table, which isn’t the best position for a team that has played much better than their standing would suggest.
LA Galaxy, on the other hand, have done well to get results going their way. They sit 3rd in the league table after getting wins in 4 of their first six matches
The away side will be going in with a lot of confidence and should be able to get the win. The last time they lost to Chicago Fire was back in 2010, and it was a 3-2 defeat at home. Chicago had won 3 of their first 4 meetings with the LA Galaxy but have struggled since.
We think this will be an easier game for LA Galaxy than it will be for Chicago Fire. We’re backing them to pick up a win and keep their stellar run at the top of the conference going.
Chicago Fire made an undefeated start to the season before Orlando City ended it last weekend. They lost 1-0 to the Lions after Ercan Kara managed to breach a defense that was a man short. Brian Gutierrez was sent off in the first half for the Fire after he picked up two yellow cards.
Orlando were in complete control of the game from the start, and the red card helped them get progressively closer to the goal. The push finally paid off as Kara scored the lone goal of the game as Chicago Fire were unable to muster any attack.
The loss was hardly a shock as Erza Hendrickson’s side have only been narrowly scraping the points they’ve picked up so far. They have had three goalless draws in their first six matches this season and have scored just 5 goals. They do boast of a solid defense that has conceded just twice, and that could help them in the long run, as long as the offensive side of the team manages to sew together some solid performances to find the much-needed goals.
The issue for Chicago Fire is clearly in their midfield and attack this season, where both chance creation and chance conversion have been lacking. The passes have hardly been effective in the opposition half, and that is shown in the stats. They have a 66% success rate in the opponent’s half, and that has led to a lot of counter attacks against them. The loss of possession in key areas has made things difficult for the forwards and will be a headache for Hendrickson as the season progresses.
Chicago are averaging over 10 shots a game this season so far, despite their poor results in front of goal. Of those, they manage, on average, just 3 shots on target every game – meaning the forwards are not clinical enough to make the most of their limited chances.
The misplaced passes around the box and the goal drought has seen the forwards getting desperate and shooting quite a bit from outside the box. They have taken 26 shots from far off – just 8 fewer than the ones they have taken from inside. However, none of their shots from outside have been effective, as all their goals have come from inside the box this season.
Kacper Przybyłko has managed to score twice this season and is the club’s top scorer. Xherdan Shaqiri has not been able to hit the ground running, and the former Liverpool man has found the net just once and is yet to assist a goal.

LA Galaxy missed out on the playoffs last season and are desperate to get back to the top this season. However, their start to the season has been effective but far from fabulous, as they have been battling hard and sneaking in a lot of results rather than dominating their opponents.
They needed a late goal from Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez to get the win in their first match this season. The 90th minute goal was enough to be New York City FC, and that should have been a confidence booster.
However, they could not do anything special against new side Charlotte FC and once again needed a late goal to get the win. Efrain Alvarez was the one finding the back of the net on that occasion, but they did manage to get a lot more shots on goal.
Reality finally hit when the Seattle Sounders managed to breach the LA Galaxy defense. Despite taking the lead in the 6th minute via Chicharito, Galaxy could not do much more as Jordan Morris and Fredy Montero scored against the run of play to make it 2-1 to the Sounders before half time. Douglas Costa pulled Galaxy back on level terms right after the break, but Xavier Arreaga’s goal in the 72nd minute, against the run of play, was enough for the Sounders to pick up the win.
Orlando City replicated the Sounders’ sit-back-and-counter formula against Galaxy and got the win as well. Facundo Torres scored in the 9th minute of the game, and the Galaxy were unable to get anything past the away defense despite having 20 shots at goal. They had more than 60% of the possession in both games too, but could not turn that advantage into a single point across both games.
Greg Vanney’s side finally managed to end their losing streak thanks to an early goal from Chicharito and an own goal from Bill Tuiloma. The Portland Timbers star scored early in the second half to get them back in the game, but Chicharito ended their hopes of getting a point with a 3rd for Galaxy minutes later.
Galaxy managed to get a much-needed confidence-boosting win over their local rivals LAFC last weekend and will be looking to keep the momentum going this weekend.
